In the mighty tradition of living by committee I am posting my latest decision for livejournaldom assembled for comment and ideas. So beststephi and sui66iy are planning a party in the next month or so as I have mentioned before. I was stricken with something of an epiphany today, and I am wondering what others might think of it.
What if we were to have a luau. Would people be into that idea? What would people expect of such an event? Since its going to be the end of May it should likely be warm enough. I should like to have a beach, but I’m not quite sure how I might accomplish that in our backyard. (the brain-trust is at work, but suggestions on this are welcome) anukul suggests that I roast a pig (because “it really isn’t a luau without one”). There would of course be leis, and as its a Maverick Jam, there exists the strong possibility that there might be prizes of some kind. Does anyone else have any good ideas or suggestions? Prizes? Decorations? Cheap places to buy tiki torches, leis and grass skirts? Donations of hot tubs?
you dont know me
I am a friend of Adam Mccue’s and before he left for college, he and i threw a going away luau. It was amazing. Party city(if you have them where ever you are) is amazing, and target had some good torches. Talk to Adam for further information
Re: you dont know me
yeah, I was aware of‘s luau and was thinking i should talk to him. We do have a party city, I think… will have to check it out. Oh and, ummm… hello, nice to meet you.
I just got the latest catalog from Oriental Trading Co. It’s FULL of crap for a luau. I bet if you go to http://www.orientaltrading.com you’d find all the crap you’d want.
hmmm… I am very much disappointed by the lack of orientals for trade on that website… hmmm… I’m sorry, was that racist? Well, what do you expect from me, after all, I am colored…
I don’t know if you remember when Aiton(?) tried to make a beach in John and Anu’s apartment, but even if you don’t, I highly recommend *not* making a beach indoors.
yeah, I’m not even considering that. I’m much more concerned with how are we going to get a hottub for the backporch?
Re: my version
Disperse your collective monitors around the house with pictures of sand and surf. See if you can dig up a projector. Inside do cheesy tiki-bar torches with fans, appropriately cut pieces of red and orange cloth, and bottom lighting. Outside, real torches (fire good!). Put in a bamboo drop-ceiling, or a facsimile thereof. See if you can dig up some ukelele trip-hop, or at least throw on the Boo-yah Tribe.
Lots of real flowers for visual and olfactory appeal!

Re: my version
Oh my god… you know Boo-Yah!?!?!
Brothas, do we have bass? Yes! We have bass!
Re: my version
Hey, they’re one of favorite Samoan rap groups!

Re: my version
one of… 🙂 who’s the other?
Re: my version
Mostly old-school stuff my sister picked up in New Zealand (where the Samoan influence is pretty strong). But King Kapisi’s album is available over here as an import, though he’s more hip-hop than true rap.

luau!
wow, i’d so love to go to a luau to meet you and your beststephi and peeps. 🙂
it sounds like so much fun, i’m inviting myself _if_ it isn’t during memorial day weekend. if so, bad for me. i already have plane tix to visit a friend in DC.
i even have a lei or two stashed at work from last week’s “let’s improve the morale around here, and that’s an order” party.
hm, as far as luau shtuff… i suggest getting some ukelele music on CD from your local library perhaps? or, failing that, soundtrack of lilo and stitch, or elvis music.
Re: luau!
well, of course you would have been invited anyway, along with the rest of hahh (if I ever get around to having my hahh address switched to an account that I actually read — which is why I’ve been silent the last 6 months or so).
The date is not completely set in stone yet, but, yeah at the moment we leaning towards memorial day weekend. Sorry. You and your friend could always drive up from DC. The more the merrier. If not, there’s alway Jammy Jam in August (tentatively the 9th). Watch this space (and don’t say I didn’t warn you! )
Re: my version
Mav, tell your landlord to reserve crash space for me for both occasions. The Spyder is in need of a road trip.
Hmm, I guess that ties in nicely with the ecological footprint conversations…..

Re: my version
He has been told. For future reference, when referring to him in a landlord state, we prefer to call him “Old Man Higgins.” It just has a nice landlordy feel to it. I also think he is probably secretly the Ghost of Gaylor Gulch Creek that has been stealing all the saloon money, but me and Scooby can’t quite proove that yet.
