so I’m a professional wrestler…

or at least I will be. After visiting the IWC‘s Coalition of Competition training facility, I have decided to give the whole thing a go. The class is about 4 weeks in, which means there’s a bunch that I have missed, but I figure I can catch up since they’re still on basics (much of which is falling and kippups I know from various martial arts training). They are beginning to chain together a few moves, however, so I’m glad I at least got to watch this week so that I know what I have to pick up on. So anyway, starting next Thursday, my quest to become the man of 1000 holds.

I do sort of wish I knew someone else who was doing this with me. Would be nice to have someone to practice with. But oh well… when I’m heavyweight Champ-PEEN of the world, you’ll just all be jealous.

    Lawdy, Lawdy, Lawdy…

Be careful son. You’ll put your eye out (The Universal Mother’s Warning). I’m gonna pray for you. 😉

nah… don’t worry about that… eye gouges are illegal… I’m much more likely to break my neck…

Your Kung Fu is Very Good, But Still…

Part of me wants to play too, another part of me really knows better.

well, as you pointed out a long time ago, I’m not all there… but really, next to forearm training, how hard could it be?

You’ll have to let me know 🙂

I don’t think this form fits either into the “we teach peace” or “we teach pieces” paradigm, so really anything can happen.

well, one could make the argument that its peaceful since you’re pretty much trying really hard not to hurt the person you are fighting… but anwyay, I wouldn’t approach it so much from the martial artist/fighter in you as I would from the fight choreographer/actor in you.

            Agreed.

Though I have to say that one of my greatest assests as a fight choreographer is my martial arts/fencing background (onced I got over the conflicting reflexes and such).

I would like to learn the intricacies of ringside ropes as weapons though.

yeah, I think previous background is what’s going to help me actually catch up. The one thing I am worried about is learning to let people hit me. I was talking with one of the instructors, and he told me that having a fighting background will help me, but that’s always one of the biggest adjustments.

You’re right. Turning off your reflexes will be the biggest challenge. Speaking from having to have gone through that, sometimes it’s almost painful. There is a mental block to break through for martial arts types in this stuff, but once it’s over with the learning curve gets really sharp.

Was impact conditioning really that bad?

I started kind of taking it for granted after a while.

I liked it… but I’m nuts… as I recall you hated it at the time, but saw it as a necessary evil.

Re: Your Kung Fu is Very Good, But Still…

I didn’t hate it per se by the time I was instructing, though I still did (and still do) retain my general allergy to pain.

As I recall I was amazed that so many of you lunatics actually LIKED it. When I started out I dreaded being handed over to a high rank for that shit, and started to work on it if for no other reason than to make it not hurt anymore.

Funny story related to that, once in NYC some years ago I was doing a martial arts class/demo for a group of actors, and I tried to do the conditioning demo where I get two guys to hold the stick and I bang against it. Now, I hadn’t done this demo in a long time and had gotten considerably better since last doing apparently, since on the first strike I broke clean through the stick. So we are all standing there with surprised expressions (for different reasons, I was totally not expecting that) and I need something to say, so my statement is, “obviously we are dealing with inferior timber in this case.”

eh… sadly, I think I’m a long long way from being able to actually teach anyone what I’ll be learning… Bad enough trying to not kill myself…

She just wants to roll around on a mat with you, now that you’ve made Max your bitch.

I’m unable to post this with a different security level than the original message, so as to make it visible only to people who want to see tennis-related trash talk. Maybe I should bring up that feature in .
