on porn and purpose…

So beststephi and I were talking about pornography and what it means to different people, the differences between what men and women think about it and so on and so forth. So I thought I’d post a little call for discussion here and see what people think. You don’t have to answer all the questions, but I want to know what’s on people’s minds.

Do you like going to strip clubs?

Do you watch porn? What kind? Hardcore? Softcore? Erotica? Skinimax? Amateur? Just nudie pics?

What do you look for in porn? Interesting stories? Good sex? Attractive people? Good lighting?

Does porn turn you on? To what level? Does it actually make you horny? Do you watch it to masturbate? Do you watch it while you actually have sex with other people?

Do you try to learn new things from porn?

What do you prefer watching? boy on girl? girl on girl? boy on boy? groups? Bondage? fetishes? Do some of these turn you on more than others?

Where does animated porn fit in? Do you like it at all? Is it the same or different?

Anything else you’d want to say, I’d be interested in hearing. Tell your friends that I don’t know to come and answer as well, I’m pretty curious.

“Do you like going to strip clubs?”

Never been, would like to go sometime, but in Canada. Maybe in a week.

“Do you watch porn? What kind? Hardcore? Softcore? Erotica? Skinimax? Amateur? Just nudie pics?”

I occasionally go and get some hentai off the internet, and it’s generally always hardcore. Pixelation is the bane of my existence. Goddamn the Japanese. Occasionally I deign to view real women, but I’m much more picky about that, so it happens less. And there’s got to be actual sex going on, or it’s just bad naked art.

“What do you look for in porn? Interesting stories? Good sex? Attractive people? Good lighting?”

If I had my way, I’d have a massive collection of well-drawn, unpixelated, lesbian hentai storylines with character development and lots of flirtation and reluctance. Oh, yeah.

“Does porn turn you on? To what level? Does it actually make you horny? Do you watch it to masturbate? Do you watch it while you actually have sex with other people?”

Oh, it turns me on, when I’m alone, and no one is scheduled to be in the same house with me for a few hours. And then, the self-lovin’. And that’s the end of that question.

“Do you try to learn new things from porn?”

… Unless you’re talking about how to draw better hentai, no.

“What do you prefer watching? boy on girl? girl on girl? boy on boy? groups? Bondage? fetishes? Do some of these turn you on more than others?”

Girl and girl. A little man action is okay, but it should be kept to a minimum for maximal warm glowy feelings. A little light bondage is okay, but I’d rather the fictional people in my fantasies appear to be consenting to whatever is happening. Coyness, convincing, and shy reluctance always add to any story.

“Where does animated porn fit in? Do you like it at all? Is it the same or different?”

I prefer comic form to anime. Less hitting of the rewind button, and my mind can interpolate between panels. And quieter, so there’s less chance to be caught looking at it.

Never been, would like to go sometime, but in Canada. Maybe in a week.

Why Canada? Is there something I don’t know about the women there? Do they have a third breast or something?

“Do you try to learn new things from porn?”

… Unless you’re talking about how to draw better hentai, no.

I don’t believe you. I bet you’re studying better ways to use your cybernetic tentacles right now. Seriously though, I’ve never seen any hentai, or manga at all, type drawings that you’ve done. I’d love to sometime.

Your distasted for non-consensual but your fetish for reluctance is interesting. I’ll have to ponder that a bit. Why do you think it adds something? I mean, I have a couple ideas about things like the corruption aspect, the stolen innocence, the power, but I’m curious as to whether you’ve given it deep thought or is it just kinda “one of those things that Laura likes”

      thanx for answering so fast.

    porn q&a

Do you like going to strip clubs?
I don’t go often, but it can be fun with some friends.

Do you watch porn? What kind? Hardcore? Softcore? Erotica? Skinimax? Amateur? Just nudie pics?
I like the “Skinemax”/”B-Movies” mostly – but harder videos are exciting as well.

What do you look for in porn? Interesting stories? Good sex? Attractive people? Good lighting?
I like the “cute stories”, and the nice looking girl/girl scenes – of course a nice looking man is good too – but most are not so hot.

Does porn turn you on? To what level? Does it actually make you horny? Do you watch it to masturbate? Do you watch it while you actually have sex with other people?
It doesn’t really very often. I just think it’s interesting to watch.

Do you try to learn new things from porn?
    Yes, sometimes.

What do you prefer watching? boy on girl? girl on girl? boy on boy? groups? Bondage? fetishes? Do some of these turn you on more than others?
    Girl/Girl.

Where does animated porn fit in? Do you like it at all? Is it the same or different?
    I do not like it.

Thanks for inviting me to do this!

      Re: porn q&a

I actually like B-Movies best too. Especially ones that have a sense of humor about them, and in particular ones that involve babes from space. Something about space bimbos that just does it for me, I guess. 🙂 “cute stories” I like too. I don’t so much like just random excuses for sex. I think its better if there is a storyline. But they don’t have to take it very seriously. It should be all about fun…

      Thanx for answering so quickly…

I like the softcore/erotica stuff. I really do more in the way of reading erotic stories or comics, and other erotic artwork. Video actually seems to take something away for me. Having a fairly overactive imagination, I think I like to give it something to do.

Anything really graphic/hardcore really kind of turns me off. From my point of view, a lot of those fluids and body parts aren’t especially nice to look at. Sure, they serve their purpose, but they’re not typically eye candy (especially those big, creepy, veiny penises often featured in porn). Usually I’m indifferent to it. Sometimes it actually creates an “eeew” reaction.

I stick with mostly boy/girl and boy/boy stuff. The occasional group situation or bondage never hurts though. When it comes to fetishes, I have a rather insensitive tendency to find a lot of them laugh-out-loud funny (fur suit sex is without a doubt the funniest porn I’ve ever seen). But just other people’s fetishes. Mine aren’t funny.

I am, however, bothered by porn that depicts rape/non-consentual situations. This distaste is really a product of personal issues.

  4. August 30, 2003 at 1:41 pm

…Sure, why not? (BTB,what up dawg?)

Do you like going to strip clubs?

Actually, no. The novelty wears thin very quickly and I can only be impressed by the dancing for so long (although, the feats of athleticism are impressive sometimes).

Do you watch porn? What kind? Hardcore? Softcore? Erotica? Skinimax? Amateur? Just nudie pics?

Hell yeah! I prefer amateur porn, you know the whole girl next door gone wild thing. Erotica’s intimacy has a definite appeal, but the mainstream has a limited number of acceptable (read:marketable) storylines and suffers from the same problem as stripclubs. Softcore is pointless and hardcore…well, there are some parts of a man I just don’t want to see a close up on.

What do you look for in porn? Interesting stories? Good sex? Attractive people? Good lighting?

Camera angles. Seriously. Bad camera work screws up good porn. If the angle doesn’t make me feel involved,I’m not really going to pay all that much attention. In fact, I usually just turn the screen off and listen when that happens. Also, more important than the storyline is the chemistry between the performers. If they don’t seem like they’re into each other then I won’t be either.

Does porn turn you on? To what level? Does it actually make you horny? Do you watch it to masturbate? Do you watch it while you actually have sex with other people?

Porn is a good way to start the day…insofar as it arouses the senses and increases body awareness. Porn is best when its a precursor to any activity, be it sex, working out, going to work or out to the club. And, generally speaking, I only masterbate to porn when ( in the past) I’ve had a less than satisfactory time clubbing or I’m just really, really fucking bored.

Do you try to learn new things from porn?
Being an essentially solitary person, I obviously haven’t had all that much sexual experience. Everything I know I learned from porn. Take that as you will, I guess…

What do you prefer watching? boy on girl? girl on girl? boy on boy? groups? Bondage? fetishes? Do some of these turn you on more than others?

Depends on my mood. Most often girl on girl or girl/boy/girl. Occasionally just girl. Also, I’m not really into fetish but I have a fetish for people who are.

Where does animated porn fit in? Do you like it at all? Is it the same or different?

The thing about animated porn is…there’s just something about the voice actresses in hentai that just snakes up the base of your spine and increases the sentsitivity of your skin so that anything that happens on the screen in front of you is not only erotic, but perfectly natural as well. And that’s all I have to say about that.

I’ve never been to one, but it doesn’t seem like my thing.

Do you watch porn? What kind? Hardcore? Softcore? Erotica? Skinimax? Amateur? Just nudie pics?
Don’t watch any, as far as pics, why would I want to see anyone naked? Well-dressed is better than undressed.

      …hell…and I thought I was a cynic…

      1. August 30, 2003 at 9:39 pm

Didn’t really consider it that way. For some reason skimpy dressing is more of a turnon than nakedness.

  6. August 30, 2003 at 10:24 pm

Do you like going to strip clubs?
never been to one, but i doubt i would like it. sometimes when i’m really in a girl-diggin mood, i think i would like it, but most of the time i think it would bother/disappoint me more than be enjoyable.

Do you watch porn? What kind? Hardcore? Softcore? Erotica? Skinimax? Amateur? Just nudie pics?
no. i’ve only seen 1 porn movie, part (ie, about 3 minutes, max) of another, and a couple of graphic sex clips on computers. i guess most of it was hardcore? (does that mean that they show everything, or that it’s targeted towards some margin audience or what).

i like pictures though. any kind of pictures, really (except cartoons), as long as they have attractive people with expressive (or at least interesting) faces (if the faces are in the picture). except violation pictures.. but like those luis royo ones with the demons and the girls. they don’t turn me on (like some of his other stuff), and they kind of disgust me if i let myself think about them at all, but i think they’re fascinating.. i wonder what the hell it must be like to have those things in your head and need to express them, especially so artistically/beautifully

i look at bondage pics for aesthetic reasons, and just plain curiosity. i have never been turned on by a bondage picture, but i have by a couple pain-play images.

What do you look for in porn?
i look for realness. depth, gravity, sensuality, emotion, and respect. so porn movies/clips do nothing for me. there’s nothing real about them – they bother me in their frivolity and lack of respect. they lack sensuality also. sexuality is not the same without it. which doesn’t mean it’s bad, but i just don’t need to look at it. i guess i like to learn something – be exposed to new things, new perspectives on sexuality. and the standard “people stimulating one another and then climaxing” does not teach me anything about the variety or range of human sexual experience

B00BIEZ (take II, with working html. I’m such an idiot)

Do you like going to strip clubs?
I’ve been to the Cricket. I found it amusing. The women there look pretty natural, no silicone and/or surgery. I’ve never been to one of the more raunchy clubs. I may someday.

Do you watch porn? What kind? Hardcore? Softcore? Erotica? Skinimax? Amateur? Just nudie pics?

Staring at nekkid people just standing/sitting there is dull. Seeing people doing things can be more interesting. Softcore tends to be kinda cheesy [Hey, there’s no way that position could really work!] and hardcore tends to be overdone [hey, let’s pretend there’s a plot to drag us to our next sex scene!], although with the right amount of camp, either can work.

What do you look for in porn? Interesting stories? Good sex? Attractive people? Good lighting?

    There are stories in porn?!?

Ok, seriously. I own one movie that could be called porn, Picasso Trigger. I originally saw it as a Joe Bob Briggs Skinimax Special back in the late ’80s. It is soooo cheesy and full of bad, bad, BAD dialogue it falls into funny, though there’s one scene that actually is rather sexy.

Does porn turn you on? To what level? Does it actually make you horny? Do you watch it to masturbate? Do you watch it while you actually have sex with other people?

Rarely does it have any effect on me, but that’s probably because I tend to watch it with others in a more MST3K-style setting. I’ve never watched it while having sex with another, that might be a different situation.

I had a housemate once who had a BF who, in turn, had a friend who had an -extensive- videotape porn collection. The BF used to borrow tapes from the friend to try to get my housemate “into” certain “ideas”. She would come home with said movies and she and I would watch them together. Usually we’d fastforward through the sex [watching basic het sex is, to me (and her, I guess), dull] and then run “the money shots” backwards so the guy would look like a vacuum cleaner. The next day the BF would call her up and say, “Why don’t I come over and we can watch those movies?” and she’d tell him, “I watched them last night with my housemate.” Boy did that BF hate me…

To give you an example of the “idea movies” he’d give her, there was one called, “The Anal Avengers”. (cheesy bad sci-fi porn!)

Do you try to learn new things from porn?

I think the only thing I’ve ever learned from a porn movie was, “OW. Don’t DO that!”

What do you prefer watching? boy on girl? girl on girl? boy on boy? groups? Bondage? fetishes? Do some of these turn you on more than others?

Whatever. Within some reason. One night the above boyfriend sent my housemate home with two tapes. One was called “Barnyard Surprise.” We decided we didn’t want to watch and find out what the surpise might be. I mean, EEK.

Where does animated porn fit in? Do you like it at all? Is it the same or different?

I saw some japanese animated porn once, it was goofy. I mean, it was one step up from puppets having sex, you know? And the dialogue… ow. And Hentai is just … ya know… tentacles??
They belong on my sushi plate!

  8. August 31, 2003 at 5:16 am

I agree with all of what said, most of what Regina said, and the comment mg4h made about rewinding so that the guy looks like a vaccuum cleaner was so funny I think I laughed loud enough to wake up my housemate.

The only thing that could be called porn by mav’s definition that I have returned to on a regular basis is written erotica. I have a really good imagination. It’s my most sensitive sex organ.

I also differentiate between erotica and porn, and my benchmark is this: assuming (hypothetically if necessary) that your sexual proclivities (het/queer/fetish, etc) are the same as the protagonists’, is the situation being portrayed one in which you would feel comfortable taking part?

I should also point out, although it is somewhat personal, that being a survivor of sexual abuse definitely colors my feelings about porn. The porn that I’ve seen (even the maistream stuff) has a lack of healthy portrayal of sex and sexual encounters and it bothers me… I don’t think I could be in a relationship with someone who was all like “woohoo! porn!” And, although I feel like my opinions are the exception (I worry that someone reading this will lump me in with man-haters and religious zealots although I am neither)… It is possible that I’m the only one willing to decloak.

I hope that this post makes sense. A third of the way through, half my keyboard died and I’m typing this with a mouse and KeyCaps. (macintosh forever!!!!) That’s how important it was for me to respond to mav’s question.

huh? crap. I’m sorry. I was reading a whole bunch of things at once and I did not mean to misattribute your comment. I don’t think I’ve ever met you…. please don’t throw things at my head….

        1. September 1, 2003 at 2:24 am

HAHAHA. No, see, the funny thing is, it’s a running joke. Sometime last year it turned out that Marybeth and I and another female (AEleen Frisch) get confused for each other.

I call it the WRONG FAT CHICK Syndrome. The funny thing is, I probably weigh as much as the two of them together. [But we’re all short with dark hair.]

          1. September 1, 2003 at 8:07 am

Oh man… I was just talking the other day to someone about how I’m so bad at that… last quarter I confused these two girls, my students… I kept calling them by each other’s names up until the LAST DAY OF CLASS. it was pretty bad. my only excuse is that they were both blonde and kinda smiley… but the bad thing is I do this thing all the time! with people I should really know better! The reason I was so mortified is I’ve never done it with online people… I think you and Marybeth have similar online personalities and I was doing the whole name-dyslexia thing… without ever even *meeting* you. I was like noooo-oooooo make it stop….

[[Marybeth and I and another female (AEleen Frisch) get confused for each other.]]
[[ [But we’re all short with dark hair.] ]]

Do you also all wear lots of sarongs? (the only? time I’ve formally met Marybeth was recently at one of mav’s parties… it had a luau thing and she was wearing these gorgeous sarongs all layered on each other. it was very dance-of-the-seven-veils… and so now every time I see “mg4h” I picture her wearing 18 different sarongs…. and the way my brain files things, now you will be wearing them forever too. I hope the tropical theme is cool with you. (and there’s a pile waiting here for Aeleen, if I ever run into her online or otherwise…not that I’d know of course… I’d probably call her mizmoose.)

  9. August 31, 2003 at 11:39 am

I’m not interested in porn at all. I love men. I love sex. Intimate body parts taking up the whole screen are just ugly to me. A good sex scene in a regular R movie can get me turned on. So can good writing.

For a while I talked to people on the “intimate encounters” section of the Lavalife dating site. I noticed some trends. First of all, men seem to feel comfortalbe posting pictures of their penises (penii?). They all look pretty much the same, and without something next to the penis, I have no way of determining relative size. It’s actually pretty useless. Many of these men did not bother posting pictures of their faces. Guys there also seeemed to feel it was appropriate to talk frankly about sexual acts they intended to perform without a personal introduction. They also did not seem to feel that a woman posting there should say “no” to whatever they were suggesting – as if being in favor of casual sex means a woman is a ho for hire and automatically consents to anything. Anyway I got sick of that scene…even though I prefer people being honest about looking only for sex rather than trying to date them only to find out they are looking only for sex.

  10. September 1, 2003 at 11:16 am

    We must dissent

No, I’m not a groupie raised to have the same opinions, I’m a tangential drifter– the statistical anomaly in your poll. Please bare with me if I seem hostile, because that’s what one comes to expect when bringing the different opinion in.

    Strip clubs
Haven’t gone yet, though it seems it’d only be fun in a group or done for a unofficial business meeting.

    Watching Porn

All kinds, because with most things produced en masse, signal to noise ratio is low. Most of it is not worth seeing. What kind depends on mood. Mostly hardcore or kinkier stuff. I’ll admit to being sick and perverse, but this isn’t something to advertise childishly “OOo I have xxx gigabytes/tapes/dvds of porn.”

Mood makes for the type of porn. I may be in the mood for something twisted, and beyond the norms of social behaviour. This is vague, but saying more would almost certainly get me ostracized from my already small circle of acquaintences. However I will say this, I enjoy videos and stories of control, along with those who are animated, excited and enthusiastic about what they’re doing. Pictures of basically dead models, overly repetitive motion, does not appeal to me.

Porn is for idle amusement, video is raw material for the backround to help with the mood. Written erotica is to channel the mind, defocus it from reality and into the world of sex. It is a private experience.

  11. September 2, 2003 at 4:05 am

    NO! 😉

  12. September 6, 2003 at 9:09 pm

Just because you have an under-represented male population, I’ll help you out.

Do you like going to strip clubs?

Only been once, to a real low-rent one in Ecuador. Bad experience. The girls were enormously unattractive. The alcohol was cleaning fluid. Sumner and I left early (this was for Alexis’ bachelor party). It turned out that the remaining crowd got totally plastered and had all their stuff stolen by the employees. And Alexis got alcohol poisoning. I mean, short of someone actually dying, it could hardly have been worse.

As for the concept apart from the instance, I have trouble with it. Suppose it really turns me on. What I do then? Go to the doubtless nasty restroom and jack off? If I’m with someone, I doubt I’d really need the stimulation of the club in the first place. If I want an erotic artistic experience, I’ll go to a flamenco show. It’s way sexier, as well as having actual other levels of sophistication.

Do you watch porn? What kind? Hardcore? Softcore? Erotica? Skinimax? Amateur? Just nudie pics?

Free stuff on the internet sometimes. I don’t bother with magazines or movies.

What do you look for in porn? Interesting stories? Good sex? Attractive people? Good lighting?

Pretty people who look like they’re really enjoying it.

Does porn turn you on? To what level? Does it actually make you horny? Do you watch it to masturbate? Do you watch it while you actually have sex with other people?

No, it doesn’t really turn me on. Sort of the other way around. If I’m feeling horny, I might find it… diverting.

Actually, that’s not entirely true. Erotica (define that for yourself) can turn me on, but it has to have held my attention in a non-sexual way for a while first. I don’t normally read things that define themselves solely as erotica. But a good sex scene can work fine for me….

Do you try to learn new things from porn?

Well, I haven’t yet. Perhaps I haven’t looked hard enough.

What do you prefer watching? boy on girl? girl on girl? boy on boy? groups? Bondage? fetishes? Do some of these turn you on more than others?

It’s a secret 😉 I’ll tell you my fetishes if you’re my lover, but not before.

Where does animated porn fit in? Do you like it at all? Is it the same or different?

I kind of find the dirty versions of classic cartoon characters funny (you know, like Fred Flintstone getting it on). I think the “transgression” is both entertaining and entirely non-harmful. Some of the harder hentai (with the tentacle rape and all) kind of disturbs me. I avoid it.
