so the power went out in our house at some point in the miffle of the night last night. It came back on like 16.5 hours ago. I know this because Verdandi has been up for 16.5 hours. This is because I had at some point checked the little checkbox that tells the computer to turn itself back on after the power goes out due to a power failure…
um…. how the hell does that work?
Easy. Power starts going to the firmware. The checkbox you set set a bit in the firmware. When the firmware turned on, it saw that bit was set, and proceeded to wake up the rest of the computer. The details here are of course not entirely in line with reality.
I’m not sure what you think was surprising about it…
actually, my initial surprise was mostly because i didn’t remember setting said bit. Clearly I must have at some point though.
As for the how it works, yeah, if I wanted to think along technical lines, I’d pretty much agree with your assessment. But right now, I feel like being an english major, so instead I prefer to think its possessed with the dark magic… so I turned it upside down and set it in the middle of a pentagram of fire… hopefully that will burn the voodoo out.
You need a UPS. Really.
why? apparently the deep magic that is energy saver is working just fine….
Yeah, and when a power outage at the wrong time trashes your hard drive having the machine automatically start back up will bring you a lot of comfort.
