11 years ago, during the spring of my freshman year at college, I taught myself to do a standing front flip for a Greek sing show. It was a hit at said show, and it was kind of cool to do, so after the show I continued to practice it. Eventually I randomly did it at a party while dancing. It was a huge hit on the dance floor and most importantly, it really pissed off ludimagist because he couldn’t do it, so I continued to practice it more and more.
Recently I have been using the flip during wrestling practice. When someone has me in a wristlock, I would do a forward flip off the ropes to get out of it, and then usually do a single leg takedown as I landed. Supposedly it looked pretty, and what the hell, it was pretty easy for me. I’ve been doing that flip for over a decade. I’ve done it since blowing my ankle out six years ago and not being able to get as much power out of it as I did before. I’ve done the flip when at clubs or parties where I was so staggeringly drunk that I could barely stand. Not once have I ever had a problem with it ever.
Today I had a problem.
Generally, when i flip I land on my feet in roughly the same stance as I was when I started. When I do the flip while in a wristlock though, its a little harder for me to guide and balance myself to get the height I need to make it all the way over. I had been countering this by holding on to the top ring rope with my free hand as I did the flip. Only that means that in order to do it, I basically need to be by the ropes. Kinda sucks. So I’ve been practicing doing it without the ropes. This time I landed kind of on my knees instead of my feet so I was lower than I normally want to be when i do said flip. And since my arm was still at its normal height in a wristlock, I ended up pulling my shoulder right out of the socket.
Ow.
So now, I apparently have a shoulder sprain, and so I have to take a couple days off from training while it heals up. Which totally sucks and really pisses me off. I guess I should be happy its only a couple of days (at least that’s the doc estimate, basically… its when my shoulder stops hurting, but she thinks that I look to be in “really good physical shape and so should heal pretty quickly” — go me with the sexy body) Also I’m pretty annoyed because dislocating your own shoulder is a stupid ass injury that I did to myself by making a dumbass mistake and I didn’t even have the foresight to get it on tape.
Oh yeah, and I’m out of beer….

Karma is patient my friend. Karma is patient.
This supports my theory that if I am flying through the air upsidedown, it means that something has gone horribly wrong.
Get better soon.

bah… and when you’re in a wristlock from someone really strong and you need to flip your way out of it…. you’ll be sorry…. uh or something….

Actually, one injury in as long as I have been doing it I think is a pretty fair price…
Get better soon.
Thanx…

At that point I would hope I use more traditional ukemi (and possibly kick them on my way over).
Though I admit that the choreographic possibilities are pretty damn cool.
yeah, honestly, that’s basically why I do it… Its a very pretty move… Also, it does leave me in a pretty good position to do the leg sweep when I land…. kind of a surprise sneak attack kinda thing. I’ll have to show you the tape footage of a successful one one of these days.
and I didn’t even have the foresight to get it on tape.
I think we have isolated the real crime here.
yeah… I only tape practice on Tuesdays usually… actually Monday isn’t even a regular practice day for me. I just went down there to work out because I was bored. Also, its a shame because I worked a match while I was there and tried a few new things that I thought worked really well, so I wish I had them on tape to watch them.
Oh yeah, and I hope you feel better soon. 🙂
thank you…
Tsk, Tsk, Tsk…I told you to be careful! Thank goodness you didn’t break anything. Feel better soon.
There, now I’ve done my Mama Thing. Flashback to Secret Agent Man…you should’ve had it on tape!
yeah… I wish I could afford to tape each and every practice… but digital video tapes are expensive.
And yeah, I’ll be fine… my body is generally pretty good at knitting itself back together… But damn its painful in the meantime….
Don’t take the shot!
Ack. Sorry to hear it!
Shoulder dislocations are pretty harsh. It’s actually possible to be TOO physically fit — my old tang soo do kyosa messed up a fall and pulled his shoulder. But the problem was, he was too muscled for it to pop back in! So he had his entire shoulder and upper arm in a cast for three weeks waiting for the muscles to atrophy.
yeah… that can happen… I’m not that pumped though… I am at a level where my shoulder muscles are big and strong enough that it should keep dislocations from happening on a regular basis, and I should be able to heal faster than most people (and history has shown me that I do)… so that’s good. But still…. ow…
but the game is on the line… and coach and the guys are counting on me…
ouchie! sorry to hear you got hurt, and it’s not really that embarressing, I hurt myself standing and walking, not trying to do flips and the likes =P
yeah… some days it just doesn’t pay to get out of bed… *sigh*
thanx, luv…
and somedays even wearing my lucky spaceship underwear doesn’t help.
now see… you can’t just bring up your underwear and expect people to not have all kinds of inappropriate thoughts… *sigh*
…
yeah… that’s what I’m sayin’…
dislocating your own shoulder is a stupid ass injury that I did to myself by making a dumbass mistake…
at least you actively did something to dislocate your shoulder and didn’t, like me, end up in physical therapy for partially dislocating your shoulder while sleeping.
sadly, tendons can take longer to heal than bones. speedy recovery wishes.
yeah… I see your point. On the other hand, I might feel a little better about it if it were a freak accident that I had no control over as opposed to a dumb mistake on my fault with something I’ve done a million times, I might feel better… or maybe not… who knows… *sigh*
So… tennis?
actually, Steph and I just played on Sunday. I’m definitely not up for it today, and if I were, I’d be wrestling, but I hope I’m good enough that I can play again this weekend.
