so the other day, I found a website that catalogs one hit wonders throu the last 50 years or so. Its pretty cool. I spetn some time perusing it, by decade. For obvious reasons, starting with the 80s I recognize more bands than in prior decades. So I was paging through and going down memory lane and I hit Rob Base & D.J. E-Z Rock, and all of a sudden, I’m like hold it now. Now, yes, I will grant that It Takes Two was their biggest song, but I have to say that Joy and Pain was a hit. If only because the Laker Girls used it as their theme song during the height of their Paula Abdul inspired popularity.
I’m not saying that Rob Base belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or anything, but Jay-Zdamn it, give credit where credit is due. Rob Base was a two-hit wonder. And speaking of credit, how come no one ever gives credit to D.J. E-Z Rock. Big ups to D.J. E-Z Rock. One Love. One Love!
Join us next week when I pay homage to the late great Notorious B.I.G. and explain why we still miss Big Poppa. Then i will maybe express outrage over Eric B and Rakim never getting their fair due.
I’m not internationally known,
but I’m known to rock the microphone.
Cause I get stupid,
I mean outrageous,
stay away from me,
if you’re contagious…
gah, get it out, get it OUT!
why? what better than right about now being possessed by the sounds of MC Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock?
I wanna rock right now!
I’m Rob Base and I came to get down!
You tell it! I have no idea why nobody ever recognises Eric B and Rakim. Bah.
well, to be fair, they’re likely never going to amount to much more than a footnote in the history of hip hop. But they were a brilliant footnote, dammit.
MY HANDS ARE IN THE AIR!
are you waving them like you just don’t care?
No. They are up there cause I’m a true player.
oh.. cool. Well big ups to Brooklyn!
Awww yeah!
Biggie reigns supreme!!!! Kids these days don’t even know who Pete Rock and CL Smooth are…
The list is missing “Positive K”, the “I got a man” one hit wonder. And “Snow”, the “Informer” one hit wonder.
Re: Awww yeah!
wow… I don’t think I would have even been able to come up with the name Positive K without looking it up. If they’re missing him, its a travesty. You should write in. And Snow? how could they forget Snow? He’s the very definition of one hit wonder. Informer was one of those songs that the second I heard it, I knew it was going to be huge and would also end up being the only thing we’d ever be hearing from that guy. Other songs that made me feel that include Gerardo’s Rico Suave and Lou Bega’s Mambo #5.
I’m with you
Joy and Pain was totally a hit. I remember it, and I’m from Amish country. 😉
Re: I’m with you
not only do I remember it, I still hear it played on the radio or in clubs from time to time today.
