So on the way to work this morning, while stopped at a red light downtown, there was a guy standing next to me with a sign. At first maybe I thought he was some homeless person begging for change or something, but then I actually read his sign and came to realize that he was in fact an anti-abortion protester. I looked around for a while and eventually I was able to locate another protester on the corner kind of opposite of him (it’s a weird intersection, so not exactly opposite).
And they were it. They were the entire protest.
I dunno. Somehow to me, two almost homeless looking guys with pretty lame signs all things considered just really doesn’t feel like much of a protest. Its more like loitering. It just doesn’t feel substantive enough, unless there’s either a whole bunch of people, or maybe you’re chained to a tree or laying under a bulldozer or something. There guys weren’t even chanting or singing or anything. They were just standing there holding very wordy signs. “When she got an abortion, I could hear the sounds of my baby being suctioned out.” just doesn’t have the same ring to it as “Choose Life” or the stark appeal of a snapshot of mutilated fetus on giant poster board. And why today of all days? Is April 1st really the day that you want to pick to really get your cause out? For a moment, I considered that maybe they were in fact actually performing some odd April Fool’s joke, but I’m pretty sure they weren’t.
The really odd thing is that even though I drive by that corner on the way to work every day, I’ve never actually noticed that there was a Planned Parenthood Clinic there before. So you know, it was a helpful service. Because, next time I get knocked up and my baby daddy won’t agree to support the child, now I know where to go.
Wow, at least the protestors at my clinic stand in a circle and pray and stuff, try to hand out literature, something. Laaaame.
Exactly, is it really that hard to just yell out “BABYKILLERS!” or something just to get people’s attention every so often?
That’s all I’m saying.
That’s the problem these days, nobody has pride in their work. Tsk tsk tsk…
hmmm… maybe that can be my new career. I’ll be a professional protest organizer. Liberal issues. Conservative issues. Left wing, right wing, doesn’t matter. I’ll be totally non-partisan, but you can hire me to help you get your issue out. Just imagine if we organized a Million Nazi March! People might take notice of that. If people had bothered to hire me, then Terry Schiavo could still be in a state simulating something approaching life today!
Heeheehee… Maverick: Protestor of Fortune!
Well, it can be a side job. For when I’m not serving as Face-man for the A-Team
Clearly, that would be your first priority.
I do love it when a plan comes together.
see, I’m like the whole A-Team rolled into one
Uh huh.
Maybe they were working off their court mandated community service.
by being an inefficient and ineffectual sign post?
For my high school mandated community service, I sat around a nonprofit sponsored teen hangout and made sure the nothing got out of hand, which was easy because only I was there that day. I think the “protesters” contributed more then me.
well, at least that was kinda punishment for you or something… I don’t really see what these guys are accomplishing. I mean, they sort of vaguely callled my attention to teh fact that there was a planned parenthood clinic there. But only because I really looked for it. I expect a lot of other commuters didn’t even notice them or care. They certainly didn’t do anything to convince me not to abort all my babies. I mean, like said, how hard is it to kinkos up some flyers or something. Really.
Actually…..
Mark and I just got back from panned parenthood. (for their reasonably priced birth control) I’ve been lucky enough to never run into any protesters there lame or otherwise.
I don’t like either extreme of the protesters. I am Pro-Choice, but some of the things I see in planned parethood are just too extreme. Once their was a video playing of a huge protest they had in washington I believe. They were talking with Pro-Choice women there who were saying things like “I’ve had 3 abortions and I am proud of it”
I do believe it is the womans choice – but not something to be taken so lightly, and being proud of it?
I like the happy medium. Though a good well thought out Pro-Lifers protest outside of the clinic would add excitment to the visit.
Re: Actually…..
yeah, radical people on either side of any issue are usually pretty scary.
Now I have morbid images of people trying to beat the abortion record…
when I used to work in the strip, there was often one, lonely looking old guy with an anti abortion sign outside the planned parenthood. He never did anything, just stood there. I thought he was kind of sad.
hmmm… there were definitely two there today. I dunno. Maybe they’re always there, and I just never noticed.
I am not sure if this is up yer ally, but the guy who posted this is a friend of mine, and he earns a buttload of cash….
