Is this picture funny?

Emma Watson
That ain’t butter beer…

So, when suicideking posted this image earlier, I found it hilarious. Almost everyone I talked to found it hilarious. However for reasons I don’t understand, the lovely beststephi and the delightful nowishere both just thought it was kinda blah. I so totally don’t understand. It’s Emma Watson1, TV’s2 Hermione Granger, drinking a Corona.

So I ask you noble reader, is this not the very definition of humor? Why or why not?

1: For the record, I’d like to point out that I used decorum and refrained from using any adjectives to describe the physical appearance of Ms. Watson and my opinions or preferences thereof. Suffice it to say, I think its quite reasonable to announce that Ms, Watson will TMA in 45 days in her native land.
2: Yes I realize she is actually film’s Hermione Granger, but at least one of the Harry Potter films has been on TV, and I think TV’s Hermione just has this lovely ring to it. Kinda like TV’s Frank.

yep… Thanx for answering. How did you find me? we don’t seem to have any friends in common.

ah… I post tons of images (obviously). I’m surprised I don’t get more people doing that.

          what’s the url?

  2. March 2, 2006 at 1:21 am

    no, it’s not particularly funny.

Assuming she’s in the UK in the photo, she’s only 45 days, rather than 5+ years, away from that being perfectly legal, too.

    Prudish American.

    1. March 2, 2006 at 1:25 am

You know what’s even funnier? That you would know it’s “45 days”. >:D

Yes, I have incredibly good reading comprehension skills, especially when the information I’m comprehending is right there on my screen where Mav typed it, moron.

My my, aren’t you in a pissy mood today… First you invoke a stereotype of a “prudish American” (as if that means anything in a country that diverse), then you deliberately bridle at my little post-modern joke… What’s next, Mr. Grumpy Pants?

Rule #1. When reading my blog, you can pretty much expect people to be pissy. Starting with me and continuing through the comments. Its part of the charm.

way to take it easy on the new kid… I guess if he was a regular you’d have said insulting things about his mother?

          1. March 2, 2006 at 12:51 pm

No, he’s right. it was wrong to judge you based on a stereotype. I’m willing to concede now that it’s possible that you’re not actually prudish about drinking by minors. Maybe.

Having never met you, I wouldn’t know, obviously.

            Oh, wait.

well, I did point it out… it was pretty easy to figure out by looking at IMDB.

    2. mav
      March 2, 2006 at 4:33 am

Actually, she’s already legal. As I understand it, you can drink at 14 there if you order a meal and 16 otherwise. And she’s clearly sitting at a restaurant place setting, so she probably it eating. So no its not all that scandalous.

Personally I conisder 16 plenty old enough to know if you what you want to drink and who you want to fuck. So I agree… Americans are prudish. Somehow that adds to the humor for me.

      1. March 2, 2006 at 2:17 pm

According to some random website I found with a google search, you can legally purchase alcohol in a restaurant once you’re over 16. However, you can legally consume alcohol purchased by your parents in a restaraunt when you’re under 16, and you can legally consume alcohol at home once you’re 5.

However, it also says a new licensing law came into effect in January of 2005, and they apparently didn’t find it worth the effort to figure out what the new law said.

        1. mav
          March 2, 2006 at 2:39 pm

Yeah, that jives pretty well with what told me a few years ago. That when she was 14 she could drink in restaurants with meals and once she was 16 she could do whatever she wanted.

You have a link to that site?

          1. March 2, 2006 at 2:52 pm

            http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/alcohol/alcohol_law2.shtml

I’m not sure “whatever she wanted” is accurate; according to the site, you still need to be over 18 to purchase alcohol if you’re not in a restaurant.

          2. mav
            March 2, 2006 at 3:26 pm

            hmm… I dunno… there’s always the possibility that

            1) I am misremembering the specifics
            2) she didn’t know the laws so much as common practice
            3) both

But I do know that she said she (at 17 at the time) did go to pubs and drink without incident and at least believed it to be ok.

But yeah, “whatever she wanted” could easily be an overstatement. I don’t know enough about it.

  3. March 2, 2006 at 1:21 am

i wouldn’t call it funny persay.

i _think_ understand the amusement factor ’cause she plays the icon for smart responsible girls everywhere, and here she is drinking like an adult…. the picture of irresponsibilty.

but the thing that makes it boring for me is, she’s just like anyone else her age (16) in her country (england), she’s of legal drinking age and is probably pretty well chaperoned and most likely drinking responsibly, unlike the image that might be interpretted in this country of “wild/crazy irresponsible underaged hot drinking girl.”

    1. March 2, 2006 at 1:26 am

Re: i wouldn’t call it funny persay.

You may be over-analyzing. Isn’t it funny just because it’s here, in your web browser window, and you know who it is?

only at a base level. I have lots of pictures of drunk people that she knows a lot better than Emma Watson.

Re: i wouldn’t call it funny persay.

yeah, that’s the best explanation I’ve heard. And pretty much the same one that my friend Wayne gave when we talked about it earlier. Its funny because she’s the idol to millions or 10 year old girls across America. The fact that she’s actually not doing anything wrong in her culture isn’t really relevant.

And she’s not hot… umm… not yet… not for 45 more days. Didn’t you read the footnotes?

  4. March 2, 2006 at 1:22 am

You know, I have no clue who that is. I’ve never read/seen anything involved with Harry Potter (or Star Wars or LOTR or anything sci-fi ish…except Mars Attacks which was so bad that it was hilarious). If I wasn’t sick I’d ramble more but I need more NyQuil…

    1. mav
      March 2, 2006 at 4:47 am

you know really, I can forgive not seeing LOTR. That’a big time commitment. But not seeing Star Wars? I mean, I’m not saying you have to be a geek or anything. I’m not saying you have see all 3 originals. And I’m certainly not recommending you go out of your way to see the recent 3. But the first one? I mean, in my world they make you watch that in order to graduate from highschool. Once you’re feeling better we’re really going to have to get you some culture.

      1. March 4, 2006 at 6:30 pm

Star Wars is not culture. lol. I just don’t like sci-fi.

        1. mav
          March 4, 2006 at 9:31 pm

no, in all seriousness, it is totally a very important culturally relevant film. I actually even studied it in classes in college. The other ones less so, even though honestly Empire is a much better movie, Star Wars is much more important.

  5. March 2, 2006 at 1:25 am

The only reason I think it’s funny is because of her expression. I don’t really care that she’s drinking or that she’s uptight Hermione and drinking… it’s just that she looks like she’s exageratedly doing so for effect and… well, it’s the eyes, man! She’s got a funny look on her face and it makes me laugh!

    1. March 2, 2006 at 1:29 am

Exactly … this is one of those photos where roll our collective eyes and say, with resignation, “Pfff. Actors.”

        March 2, 2006 at 4:56 am

actually, no, it makes me want to invite her to a party… well in 45 days… but I’m not planning a party for another couple months anyway.

    2. mav
      March 2, 2006 at 4:48 am

Yeah, her expression is also a real big part of it.

      Re: sidenote:

yeah… we americans are even stupider than we are prudish(see above)

  7. March 2, 2006 at 1:39 am

It’s mildly smirk-worthy because of the odd angle of the bottle and the expression on her face. But the fact that Emma Watson is drinking is humdrum.

    1. mav
      March 2, 2006 at 4:50 am

See, I disagree… I think its funny for both reasons. But at least you recognize there is humor there.

  8. March 2, 2006 at 1:54 am

Having never seen any Harry Potter movies I didn’t really find the picture funny… non-famous kids her age post far dumber stuff on their own myspace profiles.

    1. mav
      March 2, 2006 at 4:52 am

as stated above, she’s actually essentially an adult in her homeland. So it wouldn’t even be scandalous for her to post such a picture.

  9. March 2, 2006 at 4:14 am

I didn’t even know that was her until you mentioned “Hermione”, and I guess that made it a little funny…..but I wouldn’t say hilarious

I can’t give a good reason why not…I mean just because it’s that chick from harry potter it’s funny?….Maybe if it was Haley Joel Osment.

    1. mav
      March 2, 2006 at 4:54 am

Not hilarious? Even with my caption? “That’s not butter beer.” Come on! That’s comedy gold!

        “That’s not butter beer”

As always, I’m the loser. I don’t get it. Don’t explain it, though – that always kills the joke for everyone.

          1. March 2, 2006 at 12:59 pm

Read the books, no. Seen the movies, yes. Paid close enough attention to remember something like “butter beer”, not a chance.

          2. mav
            March 2, 2006 at 1:02 pm

ah… its probably more obvious if you’d read the books. Its more of a big deal anyway. To the extent that its a deal at all.

  10. March 2, 2006 at 6:23 am

It’s somewhat amusing, but I’d say it’s more cute than funny.

    1. mav
      March 2, 2006 at 12:55 pm

I’ll accept cute. TMAable girls can certainly be cute before they actually TMA. But be careful walking that line.

  11. March 2, 2006 at 2:47 pm

I would actually say “Hollywood’s Hermione Granger.” That has a nice, old school, 1940s, Ingrid Bergman sort of ring to it.

    1. mav
      March 2, 2006 at 3:30 pm

I actually did think of that one, but I decided its really not appropriate since that movie isn’t really from Hollywood at all.

  12. March 2, 2006 at 3:28 pm

I think it’s somewhat funny, because of the posing. It’s like someone was about to take her picture, and she was all “no, wait, make sure this photo makes it clear that I’m drinking a Corona!”

Also, because it’s posed as if she were trying to drink it by absorbing it through her top row of teeth.

    1. mav
      March 2, 2006 at 3:37 pm

well, to be fair, who among us hasn’t hammed it up while posing for a picture and downing a cold one?

      1. March 2, 2006 at 3:56 pm

Dude, I’ve seen you drink. You’re not hamming it up there.

        1. mav
          March 2, 2006 at 4:08 pm

sure I am… well, I’m more hamming it up for the party… even when I was a total drunk, I never chugged like that just to do it.

      2. March 2, 2006 at 6:01 pm

Exactly. And we ham it up for the humor factor.

If it were just a picture of her nonchalantly taking a sip of her Corona, it would just be some famous chick having a beer. It’s the hamming it up that makes it funny.

        1. mav
          March 2, 2006 at 6:06 pm

oh, I think I’d still consider it funny… just less funny…

  13. March 2, 2006 at 4:30 pm

    I don’t find it funny.

I’ve seen it linked a lot as an example of underage drinking, and humorous at least partly for that reason. But she’s in the UK, where if you are 16, you can buy beer with a meal (and she’s clearly somewhere that serves food). So it’s pretty much the equivalent of a picture of a 20-year-old American actress with a beer, and I just don’t get why that’s funny.

    1. mav
      March 2, 2006 at 4:50 pm

Since you’re such an HP fan, I’ll actually go out of my way to summarize a lot of what’s above (and since I’ve passed 50 comments, is now sadly collapsed and harder to read).

Basically, its funny for a couple reasons. 1) the look on her face. Drunk people look silly sometimes.
      2) As Hermione she is the idol to millions of 10 year old girls all over America. The fact she’s legal isn’t relevant. Its just like when Xuxa got knocked for doing kiddie porn, despite the fact that at the time and in the place that the film in question was made, she was doing nothing in the slightest bit illegal.

Summarizing the british laws. Watson is 15 currently. In the UK she can legally drink in a pub/restaurant at 14, so long as its with a meal (as you said, she clearly appears to be at a meal). She’ll be legal to just order a beer alone after her birthday next month, so yes, worst case scneario, she’s just drinking a beer a month too early. Not something unnusual. But she is a celebrity, and as with Lindsay Lohan before her, its not surprising that she’s going to take flack for something normal kids just do.

Of course I also stated several places above that personally, I don’t think she’s doing anything wrong. I think that at 15, your entirely capable of understanding alcohol and making the decision of whether you want to drink some or not (and I feel the same way about sex, which though not relevant to the picture, came up in the discussion as well)

  14. March 4, 2006 at 2:53 am

you are all missing an obvious point

That is not a picture of Emma Watson drinking a Corona. That is a picture of Emma Watson hamming for the camera. Nobody hoists a beer to their gullet (even a Brit hoisting a Corona) at the neck with their pinky finger extended, if they are intent on drinking it.

Re: you are all missing an obvious point

eh…I agree she’s hamming it up for the camera. She’s a goofy 15 year old girl. As pointed out to above, we all kinda ham it up for the camera a tad when we’re holding a drink
