Day 40 of 365 days.
I can’t believe I’ve been at this for 40 days. I’ve been doing simple snapshots for the last few days, and I decided I wanted to try something a little more ambitious today. This is actually an idea I had for a couple weeks now, but I hadn’t gotten around to trying it. I’m a huge fan of both the Sin City movie and the original comic books. I wanted to try and capture the feel of that. My approach to mimicking Frank Miller’s artwork is a little different than Robert Rodriguez’s. While I wanted to maintain some pulp detective style tonal range and lighting, as he did in the movie, I also wanted to get the stylized cartoony effect that Miller draws with. So as my compromise was to use a high posterized effect over the black and white portions while maintaining tonal range in the red dress.
I don’t know. It was just fun to be in that world for a bit. Thanks again to Steph for stepping away from her long night of working on her presentation to spend 15 minutes putting on a slinky dress and posing with me.

I too love the film and the books, and this is an excellent re-creation of it. I’m just imagining how much work it must have been for the film-makers to do this to every cell on that film! I guess computers come in handy.
Ok, so my main problem with this is that I think it crosses the line between photo and painting for me, and so loses marks on the personal capture section. I would have been more interested to get close-up with the two figures and lose the writing at the top.
I’m not convinced by the expression on the girl’s face – she looks almost bored by the proceedings, which takes away from the impact of the photo.
Apart from those niggles, this is great.

hey… just wanted to let you know, I’ve been so busy that I haven’t been able to check out your 365 Days project until today. I love what you’re doing. I’m a comic fan as well… and it’s nice to see you being creative with your daily photos and putting a comic spin on them. It’s easy to get in a rut with the 365 Day thing… so having fun with it is the only way to get through it sometimes. good job!

I especially like the idea behind this image. The only thing I see is that your text on the top is too white and competes visually with the figures below it. Try enlarging the figures or shrinking the text to balance it out… or both! Anyway, I don’t want it to sound like I don’t like this photo because I REALLY DO!!!! The creativity you put in this piece is inspiring!
