Day 160 of 365 days.

Last week I joined a flickr community created by fellow 365er, daverexwood. Dave is taking a photography class and has challenged others to do his weekly assignments with him. I thought it’d be a fine set of exercises to work on improving my photography. There were four assignments for the first week. I gave myself a little mini challenge. I wanted to try to take one pic covering all four assignments for the first week. I actually tried to come up with stuff a few times earlier in the week and failed miserably. So today, I decided I’d just junk the idea and do them separately (I actually had some shots from the earlier in the week that I could have used that fulfilled some requirements).

Then I decided to cook hamburgers for dinner for me and Steph, and the idea was born. I knew a shot that could fulfill each assignment as well as work for a 365 shot for today. So rather than cook the burgers in a frying pan, I grabbed my trusty indoor grill and this shot was born.

The assignments:

1. Use selective focus to emphasize your subject in a photo. (tag with cwd11)

2. Hands are the subject. (tag with cwd12)

3. Tells a story. (tag with cwd13)

4. Lines and Curves. (tag with cwd14)

I don’t know that I will continue trying to do all the exercises in one photo. In fact, I’m pretty sure I won’t, since it’s really difficult and I think I could get four much better shots if I separate them out and don’t focus on trying to mash them together. But it was an interesting challenge for one week.

haha… i’m sure he’ll say you’re cheating for doing them all in one 😉

  2. January 18, 2007 at 9:22 pm

yep…if you check one of the threads, he specifically says that is definitely cheating…because I wanted to try the same thing!!! maybe if you don’t say anything he won’t figure it out….hurry edit, edit, edit!!! 🙂

Heh… that’s ok… Dave is welcome to pronounce me not a cool kid. I’ll try harder to be a cool kid next week.

I really like the black and white, and the lines on the grill drawing your eye straight to the burger. Awesome shot!

    Cheater!
    😀
I asked if I could do that and he said no, but see…you were smart and didn’t ask first. Heh.
I love the shot and think it is cool that you got 5 in 1…you’re still a cool kid in my book. 😉

Ha, ha! You’re in trouble now with the teacher! Cool that you got all four elements in and the 365 as well…

The first thing I take note of when I meet a man is his hands. I cannot tolerate dirty fingernails!!! You have nice hands! And the pic is cool, too. You’re making me hungry for a burger. Time for a BK run!! Stay cool, man!

    thank you, everyone.

@Sarah: an old boss of mine used to always say "its always easier to get forgivenes than permission"

    BAH HA HA HA!

This is so incredibly awesome. I’m very impressed.

Seriously laughing out loud…more than I have in a while!

Thanks everyone for busting Mav for me. Mav, I too am a BIG believer in the "ask permission after the fact" motto. You are definitely on some sort of "cool kid" list for this shot. Just not the official one. Kinda like when Barry Bonds passes Hank Aaron…you get a big asterisk. 😉

    This is awesome.

Thanx, Jessi and Dave. And if an asterisk was good enough for Roger Maris, it’s good enough for me!

Hey I think you did a great job! Don’t let them bust your balls 🙂 AHAHAHAhAhA! Now, I want a hamburger. God I’m easily influenced!

Haha wow that’s awesome… I had a hard enough time taking ONE photograph that tells a story, never mind getting all the assignments AND a 365 in one shot! And it’s a great shot to boot!

  15. January 19, 2007 at 1:01 pm

Thanx everyone, and sorry for making you all hungry.

  16. January 19, 2007 at 9:15 pm

Damnit, I asked earlier this week. I should have just said nope, not gonna ask, like you. Oh, well! 😉

I like that grill. Now I want burgers.

I’m really amused by that asterik on the official "cool kids" list… so funny! 🙂 I’m also impressed you got them all into one shot! Don’t worry, I’m pretty sure your name is engraved on the cool kids list…

the sixth anniversary of take a class with dave and dave will soon be here.
In its honor there is a commemorative assignment. The assignment, should you choose to do it is SIX Any interpenetration is acceptable. Due 11 Jan, 2013
For those who don’t know, the group has faltered recently, This would be a great way
to show thanks to everyone that participated and Ministrated for the past 6 years.

i tried to send everyone a Flickr mail, but Flickr would not let that happen
so everyone may get this comment more than once.
