Day 199 of 365 days.

There was actually a lot I wanted to get around to doing today. Working on some photo editting. Working on my paper for the conference. Playing some quality video games. Didn’t really get to any of that. Instead, I spent the day doing phone interviews for a couple different jobs. I guess you have to what you have to do. In any case, I’ve already been told that I have an in-person interview scheduled, so I guess that’s something.

In any case, right after I got off of my final phone call, i was surprised to find that my new studio lights arrived. I was very excited and had to put them together immediately. In addition to replacing my boom light I also picked up a soft box, something I’ve wanted for quite a while. That gave me the chance to play around with diffuse light in ways I was unable to do with just my umbrellas. My studio is now 3000 watts. I could cook a turkey if I wanted to. I may be developing a problem. I wonder if there’s a Photography Anonymous.

Yep, that should be the next group. We need a 12 step program.
Nice naked pic by the way. If you were a girl and showed a little bit more skin, you’d get like 2,000 views! Anyway, the tat looks great in this. And the lights are doing a pretty awesome job.

Seen in my contacts’ photos. (?)

@lrayholly: yeah… it’s totally your fault for not making me a girl.

  3. February 27, 2007 at 1:19 am

Kinda wish there was a tiny bit of light coming from the other side…just an edge light maybe…but this is still cool…the hand especially.

  4. February 27, 2007 at 1:24 am

Love the light. I catch a hint of light on your right shoulder on my monitor. Honestly though, I wouldn’t care if it was totally blacked out. I wish my tax return would hurry up, I gotta get me some lights…

Seen on my Flickr home page. (?)

@chrismaverick.: not my fault. the father determines the sex. I’m exonerated

@max1975: yeah, I thought about it, and I’ve done stuff like that before. But I was really looking forward to lighting something with just the softbox. There’ll be more pics to use it in conjunction with the other lights.

@Sick Little Monkey: yeah, there was a tad of reflection across my back because of the angle I was standing at to try and get my shoulder and hand in the shot the way I wanted. So you can see just a little but of opposite shoulder highlight. Yeah, you’ll love getting new lights. Let me know what you’re getting. And thanx for the fave.

@lrayholly: A trip to the netherlands and a little operation, I never would have known…

  8. February 27, 2007 at 1:47 am

Nice lighting. Lovely photo as always. I gotta get me some lights and then join the club (P.A.) heh heh!

  9. February 27, 2007 at 1:57 am

@PhotoKat: Thanx, Kat. I kinda liked this one and was hoping it would go over well. And yes, you certainly should get some lights. I shouldn’t be the only person selling plasma for photography equipment. It all starts with buying a big ram card. Nothing major. Just a couple gigs. Next thing you know, you’re turning tricks in a back alley just to get your hands on a cheap flood light bulb. I’ve seen it happen time and time again… So what I’m saying kids, is stay in school!

Really nice. You look a bit like someone tattooed you while you were asleep and you’re thinking "what the *$!?!!" Can’t wait to get some lights, just waiting for the cheque…..

  11. February 27, 2007 at 3:48 am

Oh I am jealous that you got all that stuff 😉 I love your picture, the way I can only see your shoulder but all the rest is there, only hidden in the darkness. very strong!

@SU365: Actually, I have a bruise on my arm from wrestling the other day. I was rubbing that. I knew it wasn’t going to show up in the final pic, but it gave me something to concentrate on to get the look I wanted. Definitely let me knw what lights you get when you get thek. Just like I was saying to PhotoKat. It really can become a problem really quickly.

@KatColorado: Yeah, I’m pretty happy with all of it. I’m glad you liked the picture. I’m very fond of using shadow in my shots.

Wow…this is great Mav. Love the tones and the detail.

I love this shot, Mav!! So sensual and a really beautiful shot.

  15. February 27, 2007 at 10:01 am

    This is beautiful, Mav.

But the whole ‘touch yourself’ idea… I was hoping for something more. 😛

  16. February 27, 2007 at 10:17 am

I LOVE this shot… the lighting is just beautiful!

    (Nice ink too!)

  17. February 27, 2007 at 12:18 pm

@d.rex and @sadandbeautiful (Sarah): thank you.

@jessi.: what am I, just a piece of meat? 😉

@boheme333: Thanx, I designed all of my tattoos myself.

  18. February 27, 2007 at 12:22 pm

You invested well in those lights, sir — the shot is fabulous. And so is the tat.

Lovely light setting, maybe even a bit more contrast for my own personal liking. The pose is very nice, showing a man who’s proud of his tattoo and has a passion for them. Anyway, that’s how i see it.

    @manganite and @boncuk: thank you.

@Zoria: thank you. I am proud of that tattoo, though actually I was rubbing a bruise on my arm.

Would you recommend flashes or spots? I’ve read that spots aren’t good for portraiture because the model can get uncomfortably hot but then they must be much easier to expose for than flashes…hmmm …….or does the test button on flashes give a constant light for setting your exposure?……I need to get to grips with this stuff before I shell out!

  26. February 27, 2007 at 7:42 pm

Ok so i was both right and wrong, hehe.

  27. February 27, 2007 at 11:09 pm

@SU365: That’s an interesting question without a clear cut answer. *I* recommend hot lights. I hate using flashes. Most other people like flashes/strobes. Exactly the reasons your mentioned. Strobes avoid the problem of having constant heat on the model, but yes, they are also harder to position and light for. I’m willing to sacrifice a little bit of comfort on the models part to get the shot (not a big deal, since the room I shoot in is in a basement and cold anyway, so the constant light of the lights heats the models up nicely). I also greatly prefer the warmer glow of tungsten to the cooler light generated by florescent strobes. So that’s what I use.

@Zoria: yep. I suppose so. Thankyou for stopping by.

Thanks for the info, lots to think about…

  29. February 28, 2007 at 8:59 am

This one had better make it to explore! Really, really cool shot.

I so want some studio lights – shame I have nowhere to keep them at the moment. Maybe just a lightbox….

    @SU365: no problem.

@rutty: nope, it didn’t at all. And that makes me sad.

  31. February 28, 2007 at 3:13 pm

I loved the lighting and composition. I would love to see some more shades of light on the other part of the face. To me the contrast appears bit on a higher side. Great portrait and focus.

I think the light is awesome, and I would love to have your skill in studio lighting. You’ve just got the equipment but for sure this is not your first studio photo. It’s obvious when seeing how you master this. But overall, I like this image because there is a strong emotion in this pic. This is not a portrait as we use to see, because the main subject is not the person, it is more focused on the tattoo, but I think this photo is drawing fantastically well the interaction between the man and the tattoo, and this is very well supported by the composition. Why should we try to reduce the score for this fantastic image?

I love the intensity you’ve created with the harsh contrast and the way you’ve highlighted the tattoo on the shoulder as well as the really rich tonal depth on the side of the body that’s illuminated. I would like to see a bit more attention given to the part of the body in shadow, possibly through some soft backlighting; even just a very fine outline of light would give some definition to the blackness on the left side. Otherwise, this is very well executed.

@existential hero: Thanks. Wow. How did you find this in Detailed Score Me? I don’t think its in that group anymore.
