I’ve said it before. I’ll say it again. I’m probably the hardest working unemployed man in the world. Today I accomplished several things. I talked to two recruiters and emailed with a third. I spent the rest of the day working on my paper for the conference I’m speaking at (its coming along quite slowly, but its coming along). Then I did some work on figuring out the details of my Tarot project. Even though I have it started now, there’s still just so much to work out. I’m now considering working with models that I found on a modeling site in addition to whatever friends I can get to work on the project. I continue to be pretty excited about it.
This shot was much harder to accomplish than I anticipated. Lighting for it was quite easy, but since I wasn’t behind the camera its not like I can just fire the shot at the right moment as the card is flipping forward, so instead I have to time the throw so that the card is in the right place as the camera fired. Even with Steph’s help, it still took forever.
Oh, all the cards in the picture are from different Tarot decks (i own like a dozen). They are all the Death card (signifying change, and hopefully me getting a job soon, picking up some successful photography work and maybe something good coming out of this conference). The one I am throwing is from the Waite Rider deck, the world’s most recognizable Tarot.
great stuff!
Very interesting. Also yeah, this project has made it so I can almost tell what a picture will look like by standing in the model’s place and looking at the lights, seeing how the shadows hit my face, and how I’m looking at the camera. That’s what makes shots like this so frustrating, just the inability to do this no matter how comfortable you get with the concept.
Good shot and interesting. Interesting choice too of the Death card. Cooler still, you are the only guy I know that owns that many Tarot decks. Ha.
Best of luck on a new job soon, and may it be doing photography. You do some great stuff.

Wonderful!
I would love to watch how your project progresses! Are you going to reverse the images?

Seen next to a fellow photo of 365 Days. (?)
very cool! Love the intense expression.
i love your eyes in this.
great capture and i love the use of tarot cards.

your patience paid off, great capture!
@Agent Retro: thank you.
@Jack Scoresby: Yeah, Steph kept telling me to just fake it in Photoshop, but I really wanted to pull it off for real.
@Tojosan: Thank you. None of the jobs I am going after are photography. I just don’t think I could support myself that way right now. Maybe some day. But in the meantime, maybe I can get some sidework.
@Casa De Woof: Thank you. Keep your fingers crossed.
@debhede: I’m sorry. I don’t understand. Reverse what images?
@Reluctant Suburbanite: You know, people say that a lot. I guess I’m just lucky to have that look.
@jeneyepher: yeah, they popped really well this time. Its all in the lighting. Thank you.
@christinelm973: Thanx
you’re a neat person mav.
@jessie doncaster: thanx. I try to be anyway.
I’ve been following your progress for about a month and you just make me feel lazy despite my job. You have an awesome body of work.
fantastic, as always.
@shonrichards: Thanx. Unfortunately, having good work for free doesn’t pay the bills.
@Okaypro: Thank you.
Good job! You have patience… something you didn’t inherit from me! I’m quite impressed.

Brilliant shot…love it!
@lrayholly: its not patience. Its neurosis.
@sadandbeautiful (Sarah): thanx. 🙂
That’s an intense look, too. I thought you were revisiting the 52 card pick-up shot from the thumb. Nicely done.

@Sick Little Monkey: oops. I meant to mention that it was inspired by my earlier 52 Card Pickup shot and Tarot Card shot.
This is fabulous, I was thinking about doing a tarot shot but I don’t think I can match this one. 🙂
Oh, neurosis, that’s different. You probably DID inherit that from me!
@Kungfukitten: no reason you can’t do it too. Let me know if you do. I’m glad you like it. Thank you.
@lrayholly: Oh… umm… gee, thanx.
Catch this, it’s the card of Hope for you! Good work.
@shinebox1: thanx
I did a tarot shot for yesterday and was inspired to feature the death card because of your picture! I could use some positive change about now too! There’s also a good feline interuppted outtake posted as well.
@Kungfukitten: cool. Good job, and thankyou for sharing it.
Wow, Chris, brilliant! Absolutely.
@Marcela P.: thanx Marcela… nice to have you back around. I miss your comments.
A very powerful, and somewhat scary shot. All that tarot stuff weirds me out. Good work man.
@SteveCrowe.co.uk: really? I didn’t think it looked nearly intense enough. Glad you like it though.
Sounds like a great project.

@Ragnvaeig: it is so far, but I have a long way to go still.
very cool shot!!
@NiamhAine: thank you very much
great shot.
@ladywynnie: thank you.
I was thinking about doing a set-up tarot photo throwing the cards towards the lens. So I did a Flickr search. This is awesome work. I wont bother now. Although I might try something else, this is inspirational.
Great job.
@Jonnyfez: thank you. Glad you enjoyed it, and by all means, try it yourself.
This is a fantastic shot. 🙂
