Day 217 of 365 days.

I was looking through my previous pictures earlier and just enjoying seeing where I’ve been and what I’ve done, and I realized that I hadn’t really done a simple portrait in quite a while. I’ve just been taking shots that were somehow related to my day and talking about that. So I definitely wanted to do something more classic today. I was also thinking that I hadn’t really used my 300mm lens in a while for much of anything, so I decided I definitely wanted to do something with that. I’d also like to point out that this is the first time I’ve used my chinese dragon backdrop. Of course it’s completely bokehed out in this shot, but hey.

ooooo Nice! I think they call those eyes "piercing".

Seen in my contacts’ photos. (?)

I get the feeling, when looking at this, that I’m about to get pimp-slapped.

I did a similar cropping of my face for my self-portrait today, although on the opposite side of the frame, and I’m not looking at the camera. And, it’s right after yours in the pool. Neat how those little coincidences happen.

I like yours a lot better, even with the "if looks could kill, you’d be dead" expression on your face (actually, that’s part of what I like about this one).

    @lrayholly: that’s a good thing, right?

@Jack Scoresby: honestly, my eyes just always look like that.

@SydB42: believe it or not, this is totally uncropped. That’s how I shot it.

Nice color & detail. But it’s a little creepy how your eyes follow me around. STOP THAT!!!

  6. March 16, 2007 at 10:59 pm

@beststephi: you’re not looking at your computer screen, sweetie. That’s me.

    Very intense, very sharp!

And here I was thinking it was the 50mm at arm’s length.

  8. March 16, 2007 at 11:03 pm

@phlewght: thanx. I very infrequently take arm’s length shots at all, actually. I’m all about the tripod.

  9. March 16, 2007 at 11:18 pm

Well, now you’ve got me. I’m all over the arm’s-length, no-crop, facial-expression shots, so this looked familiar….

Edit: You must have been right at the front side of the DoF, because your R eye is sharp, but your L eye isn’t. I’m pretty good at focusing on an eye with arms’ length shots, and the DoF on your face at 300mm and f/5.6, uncropped, still makes me think of the more shallow DoF of an arm’s length shot. Cool!

  10. March 16, 2007 at 11:23 pm

@phlewght: I certainly don’t have anything against it. I just don’t work that way. I find that I’m not really all that good at it.

Edit: yeah, its a little tricky when shooting that shallow. I have to focus and then remember where I was standing and get right back in the right shot. I’m actually standing a good 8-10 feet from the camera, maybe.

  11. March 17, 2007 at 10:34 am

Wow, 8-10 feet from the camera and no cropping to get this shot. That’s pretty impressive. The one I did is arm’s length and I ended up doing some cropping because I didn’t like how the top of my mouth looked with the rest of my face.

Oooh, Mav, I love this one! Your eyes are amazing. How have I never noticed this before?

    *slaps hand to face*

  13. March 17, 2007 at 5:10 pm

@SydB42: well, it does use a 300mm lens. That’s like using 9x optical zoom on a P&S camera.Your pic was at 6mm. Which is basically a wide angle.

@jessi.: I secretly went out and got new eyes yesterday morning. 🙂 But thanks.

    (yay, Jessi thinks I’m pretty)

  14. March 17, 2007 at 5:40 pm

That is one damn sexy look you are giving.

Ooh! And I wanna see the Chinese dragon backdrop!

  15. March 17, 2007 at 6:30 pm

@sadandbeautiful (Sarah): Ok, into the bringins sexy back pool. I’m sure I’ll use that backdrop at some point. I just need a good reason to use it. I knew it would be bokeh’d here and make a nice neutral pattern, but i don’t like to distract from me on SPs.

  16. March 17, 2007 at 6:44 pm

    Jessi totally thinks you’re pretty.

And you’re definitely bringing sexy back. Like it ever left.

  17. March 17, 2007 at 7:38 pm

@jessi.: bah… you just said you never noticed before.

  18. March 17, 2007 at 8:01 pm

Tight! You give off that ‘lead, follow, or get out of the way’ vibe.
