One of the nice things about the Class with Dave group is that it forces me to get off my ass and do different shots. I actually thought of this one weeks ago, but just never got around to it. But this week with a health and fitness assignment, I thought it’d be the perfect time to do it.
Something kind of interesting about working out under 3000 watts of studio lights. You get hot really really fast. I guess in some ways that’s a good thing. It’s all about working up a sweat, but, damn does it get hot. It was pretty fun though, and I should work out with the heavy bag more often. The draw back is that since I was doing it alone, I didn’t have anyone spotting me on the bag, and even a 100 lbs heavy bag gets some swing in it when you really lay into it. So, I fell into this routine of 10 seconds of combination, run over, press the camera button again, run back, 10 more seconds (and the bag has hopefully slowed down by the time I got back).
What I didn’t get around to doing today was working on my paper. Which I really should. But I’m also kind of feeling the call of the hottub. I wonder what will prevail.
An alternate shot for today is found here.
Hot Tub! Gimme that Hot Tub! Maverick in the Hot Tub! oh sorry, had a SNL flashback…
p.s. that turned out really, really good!
Great shot, Mav. Love the blackness. Good sense of tension and movement.

@Sick Little Monkey: thanx, I’m actually please with this one for once.
It’s so great because it’s real. Love it.
@Ms.Blue: thank you.
This is terrific—your energy and expression, the contrast, the lighting. Wow.

Great shot! I noticed that even the ties to the shorts are getting a workout! Impressive!
@Nor757: yeah, I took 80 shots to get this one, and when I was trying to narrow it down, those strings (as well as other details like my hair and the exact position of my gloves) were among the things that made me eliminate stuff. Thank you.
@dogfaceboy: thanks. I’m glad you like it.
Great shot, and the comentary really adds to it. Great job.
@buildscharacter: I try to put a story on all of my 365 shots. Glad you like this one. Thanks.
Great action shot…I love everything about it!! Definitely a fave!
That’s a great action shot!
@boheme333: Thank you. Glad you like it.
@nichole_e: thank you.
Great action shot! I love the sense of motion.
Badass action shot, my man. This is great.

Superb!
@peskymac: thank you. Glad you like it.
@Whiffleboy: thanks, I’m glad it came across.
@4cats4carol: added. Thanx.
@chicagokristi: thank you.
Honestly, I really only surprised it too so long to get a shot just like this. I kinda figured we’d see one like this from you sometime during the year. Mostly because I figured you’d have access to a heavy bag and that it’s probably part of your regular workout routine.
Great shot Mav. At first, I really prefered the color version, but when I looked at this one again I can really see why you chose it.
#400 on Explore!

@Travelinjim: actually, it used to be and then when I set up the studio downstairs there wasn’t really room for it. Now its set up in the middle of the studio, but that’s fine because the studio is moving upstairs. Very confusing, I know. Glad you like it.
@lrayholly: yeah, I went through and found it too.
Now everybody fave it so it goes up!
Excellent shot! Congrats! Seen in Explore!
Thanks for adding it to 365 Explored.

@Travelinjim: hah. thanx. And i was kidding… mostly.
@FuzzyB: I was just trying not to look stupid. But it can be intense. Glad you like it.
Oh, I really love this one! I like the alternate one too. I’m going to go back and look at that one some more. I love the swing of the heavy bag. It’s making me miss martial arts something fierce!
Wow! This is great, the lighting, the action, the emotions, the composition … the shirtlessness… It’s all incredible!! I would fave it like 3 times!!
Oh, GO DO YOUR PAPER!!

@Kungfukitten: thank you. Glad you like it. I guess you decided you liked the other better.
@evaxebra: thank you for the kinds words. And yeah, I’m trying to get to that paper. I’m actually doing pretty ok with it, but I do need to buckle down.
Fantastic shot. Great energy.
@Protagonist: thank you. It’s getting much better response than I expected.
Its great. I wonder what you meant when you refer to 3000 watts of studio lights? I only shoot with natural light and occasionally the on-camera flash, and once in a while I use some other more experimental light source (like a flashlight, or candle, or glow stick or something). I’m not familiar with studio lights. But this image is lighted with such subtlety that I can’t image how 3000 watts of lighting came into play here. Can you describe the lighting setup when you have some time to kill? Thanks a bunch! And congrats on the great photo!

Really Mav…I think this might be one of the very best in your 365 set. I love it. The lighting and the intensity in your face…and the swinging back.
This is great.

@JeffCam: Actually that’s a slight exaggeration. There are only 2750 watts active in this shot. Easy answer: Yes, I have a lot of hot lights. Technical answer: There’s a 500 watt softbox at camera left 45 degrees from where I’m standing. Its above my head and angled slightly down to light the scene. Just to its left and slightly closer (say 30 degrees from me) there’s are two 500 watt flood lights. One pointed at my torso, and the other at my head for the sweat highlights. Opposite me on the other side of the heavy bag are two 500 watt umbrella lights being used as reflectors. And there’s a 250 watt boom above my head. I tend to shoot at low ISO (100 if I can, but I wanted a little more brightness here so I used 200 to keep the grain down and the tone as smooth as possible). Then I overexpose and bring it down in photoshop using the RAW plugin to really bring out the shadows and highlights and then tone everything down with a levels adjustment layer. It’s all a bit complicated and takes some practice. I hope that helps.
@d.rex: thanks. I’m not sure its my favorite, but its up there. I’m quite happy with how it turned out in fact.
I like this a lot! The strength that you have is so visible!

@KatColorado: its all done with smoke and mirrors. 🙂 Actually, I like this oe mostly because I think it gave me a rather dynamic look. I took 80 shots. Most of them were not this nice. Thank you.
This is such a fantastic shot! Wonderful job with the lighting, pose, composition, everything. It looks so fantastic in black and white. There is so much energy here – it’s such a dynamic photo! Definitely one of my favorites of yours. 🙂

@luvhumpbacks: i hope it doesn’t end the same way.
@Rachel.::.K: thank you.
I’m not usually a fan of your shots with a black backround, but this one is great!
@david_porter: interesting. Do you not like solid backgrounds at all or just the black? Thank you.
Wow, the whole feel and mood of this just jumps off the page. The lighting is fabulous. Excellent self-portrait.
Seen in week 11’s Gold Star list… congrats!
@Mayr: thank you. I’m glad you like it. I wasn’t sure it was going to be anything great when it was just wrapped up in my head, otherwise I would have shot it ages ago.
Fantastic lighting and great sense of movement and power.
Loved it, congratulations.
@jpfigueiredo: thank you for the compliment.
Well, sometimes I like solid backrounds, like red ones, but it might have just been overuse. Meaning it started to feel repetitive.
Hope that answers your question!
@david_porter: yeah, a personal preference. That’s fine.
Explore Whore!!!
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
This is quite awesome. Love. Love.
@PhotoKat: what? I’m not even wearing lacy panties. 😛 Thanks… glad you like it.
*i haven’t had coffee yet….was out too late…*

Very cinematic. Hope you got the paper written. Don’t you have a table rigged so you can write in the hot-tub????
@KarenMarleneLarsen: thank you. and i did finish. but no, i don’t trust my laptop anywhere near the hottub.
great H&F shot… wow, an extra random-work out…
[Seen in 52 Weeks – ?]
@amanky: thank you. What do you mean by extra random though?
yeah… I was having issues with wording. The added bonus/change of pace, in going to set the camera off again, etc.

Yep have to agree fabulous fabulous shot. I can feel your energy. I have to agree with you though from experience working with heavy punch bagsare an absolute winner especially for increasing strength and raw power.
