Five of Staffs

Five of Staffs

This is the second time I have coerced a model’s escort into posing for the tarot deck as well. And once again I am pretty pleased with the result. Kenny looks great with a black eye, I think. I’m starting to really like this high detail, desaturated 300 effect I am using lately. Originally the staff cards were going to be high saturation, but I think the grainy look suits them better. It makes a nice contrast to the sword cards I think.

Perhaps you could add more blue or purple or something to his black eye? It looks more intentional – like the horror movie villian with painted eye rings or something – than like a black eye. But I don’t know what you are going for.

His pose reminds me of the fly children from Dogma. And his bottom hand is so strong and powerful. Wow.

@Princess Diablo: hmmm… you think? maybe I’ll play with it later. its actually got a lot of blue in it (the makeup) but there’s a lot of color simplification that happens when I do heavy processing and filtering that I’m doing. Or I might leave it. One of the things I really like about the staff card effect is its artificialness. That’s why I’m making such heavy use of grain and light in these. Much brighter than the sword cards. If the swords are Marvel Comics, I want these to be Hollywood film noire.

@lrayholly: Do you think he looks too urban? I was going for more a preppy, suburban look, except for he’s the ruffian of the bunch.

The look in his eye is amazing for this. (Since I’m staring at that part of the card.) I think it is film noire-y, but I still feel a little hockey paint/joker facemakeup to it.

I know was not asked at me, but he seems very preppy to me. Like frat/jock preppy, so with an element of thug, but not a street thug. Like someone that comes home to Mom and has a blond perfect girlfriend and the like.

Making it a hockey stick is genius.

Look through all of these (dear god, I don’t want to unpack) I’m curious what the coins have stylistically. The Swords look like cool pictures, the Staffs are stark but still attractive light, the Cups are spot coloring, and the Coins are…just black and white? I like Steph’s card; I’m just wondering what the overall style on them is going to be. If, of course, you know yet.

this rocks so much. I totally love that you went with something completely different for the staff than any "traditonal" tarot deck would have. so. damn. cool.

@Princess Diablo: oh… I was asking everyone. I totally appreciate the feedback.

@Jack Scoresby: thanks. I thought it was kind of inspired myself.

@Princess Diablo: Coins are earthy sepia toned, as opposed to true B&W like the cups.

@jessie doncaster: maybe you have a thing for preppy hockey goons? 🙂 Thanks, Jessie

@mickeysacks: thanks. I’m glad people appreciate the alternative.

300, as in the movie? Interesting. I do love the look of this. He was great for this one…way to pick up another model!

@Miss Emily goes bananas: yeah, as in the movie. It’s the best way I have of describing that visual effect.
