Adam posed for this card while my computer was in the shop. I really wanted to find a way to really take advantage of the drawing style of the sword cards and still be kind of dynamic. This is what I came up with. All the Eight cards are going to have the symbol incorporated into them as part of the design.

Oh now that’s pretty darned slick!
@lrayholly: I was afraid it was a little hokey. But I wanted some to be more fun. They can’t all be girls slicing their wrists open, you know?
I like this one.
@adayinthelife: I’m glad. I wasn’t as sure here.
I think this is one of my favorites, just because it’s so different, yet compliments the others nicely. I like the line art (you have succeeded in that department) quite a bit. It goes with the interference.
@adayinthelife: well, thank you.
Yeah, I didn’t comment. And it is cause I don’t like the orange. I think you’ve got a really dark, good looking set of comic like cards for the sword and the orange feels out of place. It doesn’t feel like that white/orange matches the rest of the suit.
I also don’t get what the line is under interference and why the top of the symbol appears to be there. I’m trying to think that it is folded over and cut in half, but that doesn’t seem like how that would happen. It confuses me. Why is the two lines red? (Also, I’m really impressed you can draw it like that. The creation of the flag/piece of paper/symbol is really rad.)
I do really like the concept, but the white/orange just doesn’t do it for me, and the "folding over" or "slicing" of the card/flag/symbol seems incorrect – I don’t "feel" the slice. The base card is good, the concept is good, but I stumble on these two things. I also hesitated to comment because I don’t have good advice to fix it and it seems like everyone else likes it. But, like the mirror on the three, there is just something slightly wrong with it to me.
While I’m going, the shadow on the underside of his chin is somehow weird to me. Maybe a little brown, maybe a little double chin, etc. But that is just me being nitpicky cause he’s my boyfriend, I suspect. 🙂
But seriously – I really like the idea, and I really like the shot of Adam. It is just like the mirror card where I think you’ve got a great idea, but I don’t make the mental jump with you.
Also, on the original size, I can see your studio lights in his sunglasses. Which, while I think is hella cool, isn’t likely what you are going for. 🙂
@chrismaverick: I also don’t think it is hokey at all. I think the idea is really cool. The only thing "hokey" about it might be the skull on the sword…but it fits the style so perfectly that it is a positive thing, not a negative one.
Enough comments for you now? 🙂
@Princess Diablo: wow… that’s a lot. 🙂 I picked the orange because I wanted something bright for him to be cutting through to make the card pop more. originally it was black, but that didn’t work the way I wanted.
I’m not sure which line under interference you mean. Can you put a note around it?
I’m not totally happy with the slice either. Its an aspect of the flag being stylized (which I want) and Adam being stylized but clearly a real person. Not sure what if anything I can do about that.
Oh, and yeah, I was aware of the lights reflecting in his glasses. I kind of liked the pattern they made so I left it instead of correcting it out. I was kinda hoping that no one would be able to make out what they were. Of course I guess you already knew.
Oh, and thanks for thinking through so much and commenting.
@ChrisMaverick: Heh – I’m a talkative one.
I also like the reflection in his glasses. However, if you ever show these, or if they get published at high quality, I’m just worried they would be visible. You are right that the only reason I can see it is because I know what they are. But if you hung these up at 8 x 10, I think everyone would see them as well. Note that I can’t see it at all on this page, I had to click through to make it bigger before it was even "guessable" at.
As I said, I’ve got no good advice for the flag. However, since this is the only place you are highlighting the symbol for the suits, I wonder if (if I was thinking like a publisher) this is going to "label" the color for each suit. So here swords are orange. But this is just early morning yawns.
Anyway, I don’t *dislike* it. I just have some issues with the flag.
Off to shoot the sunrise.
@Princess Diablo: yeah, I see your point (on both issues) let’s see what happens after i do the other 8 cards though.
