II-High Priestess

II-High Priestess

Sarah was nice enough to volunteer to pose for the Tarot deck when she was visiting last week. The second she volunteered, I knew exactly what card I wanted to use her for. I love the tattoo on her shoulder and she has just enough hair to obscure her face in mystery and make a perfect High Priestess. Originally I was thinking of adding some background elements like I did with some of the other cards, but as I was finishing up, I felt like that would have been doing too much. I remembered why I went for the cold black backgrounds in the first place. Not to distract from the model. Just let her create the mood alone.

Comments and criticism welcome and encouraged as always.

    It’s so good to see a familiar face (err, body) in your deck.

    Love the pose…yay Sarah!

    @d.rex: I’ve got some shots that show her face that I’ll edit and post when I have time to make a "Sarah B" set… but this one was perfect for the card I thought.

    HEHE boobies

    OK, now that I got that out of the way…Pretty cut and dry and I like that for this one. I like how her hair is blending in with the background. And her ink goes well with this, too.

    Seen on your photo stream. (?)

    @Mikey aka DaSkinnyBlackMan: its a hard line to walk. I don’t want the deck to get boring. I don’t want 78 cards of "people sitting there" without a rhyme or reason. But on the other hand, I don’t want it to be busy or gimmicky. Whenever possible, I want the model to kind of speak for themselves, if that makes sense.

    It came out well. Now let’s go get a beer.

    Seen in my recent comments. (?)

    @Mikey aka DaSkinnyBlackMan: cool… are you buying?

    OMG! There I am! 🙂

    This has been so weird to see photos of me by other people this week…you, John, Tina.

    I can’t even comment on this because I’m too distracted by what I don’t like about my body. Because I’m a neurotic freak.
    But I’m so honored to be used for the deck, and especially for this card.
    Thank you!

    We’re always our own worst critics, Sarah.

    For a somewhat more objective POV … [a long, low whistle is heard].

    Well done, Mav!

    I love the mood of this picture and her pose. However, I want to see her face too. The High Priestess is the card of ultimate feminine power, she should be facing the camera instead of hiding behind her hair. 🙂

    @phlewght: thanks.

    @pi c’s: I agree. Thanks and Thanks.

    @Kungfukitten: fair interpretation. I was going for a more mysterious look though. i don’t think hiding her face removes the femininity. Rather I think it gives the impression that she could be any (and every) woman. Hiding the face is a very powerful subconcious statement. I was very into mask theory as a kid. 🙂 But yeah, I see where you’re coming from.

    Is that a bruise on her arm? It really grabs my attention and I stay focused on it each time I go back to the picture. So even if it isn’t a bruise, I’m spending all my time trying to figure out what the heck it is.

    I really like the idea of *not* seeing her face. She is every woman and no woman. She is woman. However, her pose (actually, I think it is the strands of her hair) say "pain" or "mourning" to me rather than female strength or form of faith. If the bottom of the card said "survival" I’d give you a huge thumbs up…but that is what I get here. Survival. Overcoming. Unwillingess to break. Not faith.

    Maybe if she was lit from below and the top of the card was like white or something it could be the light lifting her up and faith could be that way, but it might be overly hokey.

    I like it…but not as faith.

    Also, I like the all black cards the best.

    @Princess Diablo: hmmm…. if its what I think you’re talking about, its just a shadow.

    I was trying to push faith with te pentinent head bow, kind of vaugely religious, which is something I like about the high priestess card. The majors have more possible interpretations than the minors (where the definitions I am using were defined by Crowley). The other possibilities were mystery (which i don’t want to use because there’s a minor with the same meaning), femininity (which didn’t seem specific enough since many other cards are feminine as well) and intuition (my original choice, but I felt faith was stronger).

    Oh, I love Sarah. This is so awesome.

    (Her boobs look incredible. That is all.)

    @jessi.: thanx and yep.

    I find the shadow on the arm really distracting too. Otherwise it is beautiful!

    @leedav: hmmm… not sure there’s anything I can do about it at this point. I could dodge it out, but it would probably look really fake. Anyway, thank you.

    I have been so behind on my flickr contacts but I came by your stream because I knew you were *close* to #365…so while I am not commenting on a 365 I also like your cards and I LOVE Sarah so this just makes me very happy. Fantastic work!
