Today I saw Tori Amos in concert for like the 4th (maybe 5th) time. I actually wasn’t really looking forward to it, but Steph is a huge fan and really wanted to go, so we went.
I’ll give her credit for putting on a better show than I’ve ever seen her put on before. I like Tori’s music, but I’m kind of weird about concerts. If I go to a concert I want people to put on a show for me. Shows are visual. Tori is very good at what she does, but the previous times I felt like I was paying money to sit in a room and essentially listen to a radio. She just didn’t have great stage presence. This time was different though. Maybe she was just really into the whole Halloween theme, but she definitely did her best to entertain beyond simply singing and playing the piano. She even forced the entire band and crew to wear costumes. It makes me look forward to my party on Saturday.
The best part of a Tori concert is the audience. When I went (as a chaperone for my girlfriend’s high-school aged sister and friends) I was nearly overwhelmed. The crowd was 90% female aged 15-25.
Glad you enjoyed it.

Seen on your photo stream. (?)
@denovich: yeah. Her fans always are obsessive. Steph, Katie, Steve and I were talking about it last night. We were talking about her tour with Alanis Morrisette from a couple years back and trying to remember who headlined it. I pointed out that it was obviously Alanis because she’s a much bigger star. Steph and Katie, blissfully unaware of pop culture disagreed and were shocked when I pointed out that Tori had never really had a hit. It’s not a mark against her talent because she is very talented and her fans are hopelessly devoted (we met a couple girls who drove in from New York City because "wheee, its Tori’s Halloween party! We have to be there.") But its funny how big she is to those who are fans even though the majority of the world is more or less unaware of her.
@lrayholly: yeah, it was nice.
Woo, party! I consider it wonderful serendipity that I have to come to Pittsburgh for work the weekend of the Jam.
@khaughwout: cool. Can’t wait to see you there.
