I talked a while back about getting a battery grip for my camera, but I never showed it. It actually arrived way back on Monday and I’ve been using it ever since. I’m quite happy with it. It took some getting used to the size of the body being so much bigger and heavier when its attached, but having the extra controls and power are definitely cool.
I can’t wait to get to use it on an actual shoot. Should get the chance this weekend.
Yay. 365 Again. Great title. 🙂
Haha. I look forward to joining you in the group…
Cool! Dang man, I can’t keep up! I’m trying to tell myself that I DO NOT need a new gadget!
Hi, I’m an admin for a group called Obligatory 365 Shots, and we’d love to have this added to the group!
I bought the XTi because it was a happy medium between the features I wanted and the size my wife needed. Now that’s she gone back to the point & shoot world, I’ve been dying to get a battery grip. It looks good on ya.
@[AJ]: yeah… I hav no idea where I got it. 🙂
@lrayholly: well, it’s nice, but it’s certainly by no means necessary.
@Just Say K.B.: I actually like the XTi better than a lot of Canon’s other cameras because of the size. The grip does add a lot to it though, so there’s a definite trade off.
Cool. Someone with your size hands should like the grip for comfort — I know I don’t like having to curl my R pinky finger under the body. The XT is smaller than the 20D/30D, so it would probably drive me nuts without the grip, but the smaller size makes it easier to fit into many types of bags. Sadly, the grip will make it difficult to fit into a typical small bag with a lens attached.
The weight takes some getting used to, but I like the balance — esp. with a long or heavy lens — as well as the vertical grip and controls. I think my old brass-bodied Olympus OM-PC and 50mm Zuiko f/1.8 MF lens weigh more than the magnesium 30D body plus grip and batteries.
@phlewght: yeah, given the style bag I use and the amount of stuff I carry around, I never keep a lens attached anyway,
Like this shot. Does the grip cut down on shot recovery time dramatically?
Since neither 20D nor 30D have that nice sensor-cleaning system, I try to minimize my lens changes, so I got a nice (though HUGE and [bleepin’] HEAVY when loaded) Tamrac bag that allows me to leave a lens on.
I also have a long-ish, small-ish video camera bag that lets me barely cram the body/grip/24-70 L + hood into it, shoot-ready. If I turn the hood around and hang it on the lens backwards, I can cram in the 50 or the 10-22, but then I can’t just whip out the cam for a shot. I did that with the 10-22 for two days around Chicago this summer, and it was kind of a pain, but at least I had the super-wide with me and no 20-lb. bag to lug….
@DeHoll: not at all. It’s just for power and grip. Shot recovery time is based on card write speed and drivetrain motor.
@phlewght: oh, I didn’t realize they didn’t have the sensor cleaner. That sucks. I change lenses a LOT depending on what i want to do. Often right in the middle of a shoot.
Bummer, eh? Wish I’d waited ’til the 40D to upgrade the 20D. But I suspect that the XSi’s 12MPs whisper loudly about a 50D coming within a year, and I don’t have a spare $1K right now anyway. And then there are the rumors of the 5D replacement, so I bide my time…
