Day 774 of 365 Again.

I’ve never really liked watermarks on images. I don’t like watermarks and I don’t like digital borders on photos. I tend to put a lot of thought into the composition of every photo I take and I always felt like blasting my name across it kind of ruined something.

That said, I’m kinda tired of seeing my model shots pop up places uncredited. It doesn’t happen a lot, bt it happens enough that its starting to get to me a bit.

So I’ve decided to start watermarking them.

I went out of my way to make something that was distinctive but unobtrusive. I certainly don’t want to blast it across the middle of the image like this, but I figure having something small and subtle in the corner is probably not the worst idea in the world. I wouldn’t do it in anything for print or for my 365s, and honestly, it’s probably easy enough to yank it out if someone really cared, but lately I’ve just been wanting something crediting me on random stuff on the web.

I’m trying it out on the images of Virginia that I just posted today. Hopefully its small enough and out of the way enough that it doesn’t really hurt the image.

Let me know what you think.

It looks very cool and classy.
Definitely nothing wrong with wanting to keep the credit for your own work. 🙂

Too easily cropped out down there. Still, it gives credit where credit is due.

The watermark you added is definitely not distracting. Sure, it can be cropped out, but the fact of the matter is that it’s there. 🙂

People stealing photos on the web is not cool. I’ve had to contact a few people about images of mine showing up. On the flip side, I’ve been approached by a few others to ask permission to use my work. 🙂

it’s a shame that you have to do that. I don’t like the way that watermarks look at all. But I understand that sometimes you just have to have them to get credit for photos.

I know you don’t like them but your’s does look good. I agree with the comment that it’s placement would be easily cropped out though, thus defeating the purpose. I don’t know that it’s worth the aggravation of having if it can be cropped that easily.

The question is: will the people you’re trying to protect yourself against go to trouble of removing the watermark. I’m guessing at least a large % of them will NOT, so you win in those cases. In the other cases, you’re no worse off.

I do mine similarly. The ones across the middle of the image are just too annoying for my taste. It’s not like I’m making millions on my images…if I were, that would change my opinion I’m sure!

I used to watermark my stuff but it didn’t help. My most stolen image is watermarked. I agree with you about putting it on the side – but at the same time people will crop it off if they want…

I agree with Miss Holly (as Poff calls her). You don’t want it to be blatant but you gotta do what you can to protect your work. It’s too good to have others claim as their own.

    Yep, very classy.

thanks everyone. And yes, I realized someone can crop the watermark out, but I’m not going to ruin a composition by actually pasting in front of the pic. Most people will never bother anyway. It’s more that I just want myself credited.
