I live in a graveyard. Well sort of anyway. Actually, I live on one of
two blocks that are literally sandwiched between three graveyards. It’s
kind of creepy at first, but you get used to it pretty quickly. And if
nothing else, the neighbors tend to be pretty quiet. It’s just that when
they aren’t you really have to worry.
Anyway, the best part
about being surrounded by cemeteries is that they really do make great
locales for doing any kind of gothic shoot, and that’s really what I
wanted for the Zivity Halloween set that I shot with Megan.
It wasn’t
quite as easy as you’d think it’d be. The key is finding just the right
tomb to shoot in. Obviously it needed to be relatively private in order
to get away with doing the nude shots we wanted to get in, but it’s also
about lighting and composition. I wanted it to look sexy, glamorous and
dark all at the same time. I needed the right amount of vegetation, the
right amount of background tombstones, a mausoleum that was the right
size to really make Megan look like she belonged there. I wanted
something on top of the hill so that I could have a clear view of the
sky in the far shots.
Most of the time was sent driving around
the cemetery grounds looking for that right location. And then once we
found it, it was all about lighting it right. Preparation is the biggest
job for the photographer. And then it was Megan’s job to do the rest.
And of course like always she knocked it out of the park.
