Ok, since like half my friends list (or at least everyone named Mike) is apparently upset enough to say “Affleck is Batman, but didn’t you idiots see Daredevil” (Cough, Mike, Mikey, Michael, Cough), let’s actually think this through… Will Affleck be able to play Batman? I started to post this as a comment on everyone who mentioned it, but decided I had enough to rant about that I’d do it on my own page.

I have like 4 friends who made the exact same comment and I’m telling them all the same thing, the problem with Daredevil was not Affleck. The problem was the script. Daredevil was made at a transitional period in comic book movies where they were just making superhero property movies geeks would go see because they’re geeks (see Ghost Rider and Fantastic Four), but there were also GOOD movies about superheroes in the works (see SpiderMan). Affleck was actually fine, but the script was mediocre at best. When Marvel opened their own studio, that pushed the industry to try and make competent films with the properties. To varying success.
DC honestly hasn’t figured that out yet. The Batman movies are good. The Superman movie was mediocre at best (seriously, if he hadn’t had a giant S on his shirt, it would have been a mediocre alient invasion movie). The Green Lantern movie sucked… in the same way that Fantastic Four sucked. It would have been a fine movie if it was up against Joel Schumacher’s Batman movies instead of Chris Nolan’s. Daredevil was in this camp.
Affleck is a good actor, a great writer and an amazing director. Even his big flops (Pearl Harbor, Gigli) aren’t the fault of him as an actor. They’re just bad movies. If he produces (or given) a script of Dark Knight, Avengers or Iron Man the movie will be great. If he’s given a mediocre script, you’ll have a nice special effect laden film that geeks will go see and Warner will continue a success even if it wasn’t really *that* good (like Man of Steel).
If it’s a horrible script, like Green Lantern, then not even the special effects will save it. But I don’t think that will happen. Warner is a faceless corporation, but they’re not stupid. They know the GL movie sucked. Are they shooting for an Oscar with Batman/Superman? No. But they’ll make sure it’s serviceable, at least as much as Man of Steel, and they’ll rake in money like gangbusters because really all they’re looking for is the geeks to line up and say “Holy Shit! Batman and Superman are in the same movie”
And you will…
Ben Affleck is Batman. The actor will replace Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne in the upcoming untitled Superman-Batman feature for Warner Bros., the studio announced Thursday. Affleck becomes the eig…
