Sigh… I’ve seen a couple people talking about this list, so i figured I’d post my response as its own thing.
This list is ridiculous. It’s fanboy wish fulfillment dressed up as feminism. Here are my problems with it.
1) Wonder Woman – This one is fine. Wonder Woman *SHOULD* have a movie, and one has been in preproduction at all times for the last 3 decades. But DC’s movie division has their heads too far up their asses to let this happen. I would love for there to be a Wonder Woman film. And the Justice League films that are spinning off of Man of Steel may finally let this happen. But despite what fanboys want to believe, MOS was not a “good” film. It was a boys club smash-em-up. Which certainly has its place, but it’s far from being what needs to happen in order to make female superheroes a viable movie marketplace option. I *HOPE* this gets better. But just wishing for it is not enough.
2) Black Widow – This one is fine. I’m surprised Marvel Studios didn’t try this yet, since they have Scarlett under contract.
3) Oracle – No! First there’s the DC film problem. Second, Oracle is one of MY favorite characters, but she can’t work in a standalone superhero film. There are two things that make her interesting. First she USED to be Batgirl. In order to make that work, you have to spin her out of the Batman universe, and that character doesn’t exist in the current slate of Batman movies. And since DC has uncrippled her in the comics, she almost certainly never will. Doing her without the Batman tie-in essentially means you have to make a movie like Catwoman. Second, she’s NOT a superhero. In order to make a faithful Oracle movie, you need to actually have her controlling other heroes, and in an action movie that would make her not the star. You could make a serviceable Birds of Prey movie, and they tried to make a BOP tv series a while back. I was the only person in the world who watched it.
4) Rescue – Again, NO! You COULD do this, since Pepper was introduced in the Iron Man movies, but I actually don’t really want to see Paltrow trying to carry her own superhero film. Also, if you’re going to make a female superhero, I’d rather see a standalone character who works in her own right (Wonder Woman or Black Widow work here) rather than “the girl version of a boy hero” which honestly would be just as insulting and leads to problems like the Supergirl movie.
5) Armor – You’re kidding right? This is fanboyism at its most problematic. Of all the women who have ever been in the X-men, why not pick the one with the least mainstream recognition ever. Who cares so long as there’s good special effects, right? If you want to spin out of the X-men universe, Storm and Rogue have already been introduced and would be fine. Psylocke would work well too. Armor has as much reason to appear in a mainstream film as a D-Man and Dr. Druid buddy flick.
There are lots of female characters they could have that don’t have logistical problems. Like I said, the first two two obviously could be worked with. You could do Captain/Ms. Marvel or on the DC side Black Canary. If you want to go more obscure, but pick characters that could stand alone, Silver Sable would be awesome as would Dakota North or Zatanna or a non-Batman’d Huntress.
5 Superheroes Who Should’ve Gotten Movies Before Ant-Man
And now Ant-Man is getting his own movie. We’re prepared to have the worst possible man before the most wonderful woman. We’d rather a hero famous for beating women than being one. And she’s really not surprised, this being the exact kind of shit she came to our world to fight.
I just want someone to make Promethea into a movie. But I’m sure Alan Moore has a deep and abiding hatred for the entire medium now and it will never happen.
He does. But that was true before the League got made too…
I don’t know that Promethea would work. It would certainly be interesting, but there’s a lot of content in Promethea that would be overly confusing for a general audience. You could simplify it greatly, but then it’s a different story. It might work better as a longer HBO/Netflix style series.
I want a Captain Marvel movie bad. I had to look up Armor; the first one that came to mind was the Innovation character from the 90s.
Yes, you’re right, a series would do it better justice. I would watch the hell out of it.
“One is an arrogant psychiatrist trained in celtic magic by a tibetan lama. The other is a homeless, patriotic, super-strong ex-wrestler. Together they fight crime…if they don’t kill each other first! Kelsey Grammer…Mickey Rourke…in: Marvel’s Other Avengers! Coming soon…” Honestly, tell me you wouldn’t pay to see that train wreck.
I’d watch it.
you’d watch anything!
Fuck yo’ couch!
Oops, I’m sorry, did I interrupt your Green Lantern/Steel double feature?
You know damn well that I’ve never seen Steel.
You’d love it. Shaq is the Superman of Rap, you know.
toss in some dolph lungrund’s punisher and you got yourself the perfect drinking game night. “whenever something sucks, take a drink…”
They could make a Squirrel Girl movie……
No one can play Squirrel Girl.
There were so many better options that Rescue. So many. As a concept I think it is a kind of a cop out and it would be the same as a movie. It would really just be seen as a lesser spin off. Also I really dislike Gwyneth Pawltro and desperately do not want a movie where she is the super hero.
Exactly, the problem with a Rescue movie that there’s nobody on this earth going “Wow, you know what would make all those Iron Man movies better? If they made one without Iron Man in it!” (This is the same reason no one is really clamoring for a War Machine movie…. and I LIKE War Machine)
I’d love to see Rescue in an Avengers movie as a support character.
Black Cat’s story is easily independent of Spiderman. I wonder if that could actually get made
It could. Columbia would have to do it because she’d be a part of the Spider-man rights package. But no one wants to do an independent narrative. From a business sense the studios want a franchise. No one who doesn’t read comics knows who Black Cat is. So you try to make it a spin off so you get the crossover audience.
Rogue. I like that idea a lot, but would be insanely disappointed if they mucked up that standalone like the (shudder) Wolverine flicks. But….gawd….that could be GOOD.
How about a duo movie rather than a solo hero or a group? Like Cloak and Dagger?
I’d love a cloak and dagger movie. But people would just complain that dagger is a sexist character because of how she dresses.
Her costume isn’t any worse than Wonder Womans is
Also. “Why does the black man have to have darkness powers”
You don’t think so? The neckline comes down to her crotch.
Just to be clear. I don’t think she’s a sexist character. But that would be the criticism.
Well, except for the cut-out, the rest of her body was covered. Compare that to a bathing suit style costume with boots and bracers and I think it’s about even. Also, the cut-out part can at least have something over it, maybe lace or something and still be truer to the original costume than putting pants on Wonder Woman.
i think it would look silly with lace or something covering it. But I’m sure it could be worked out.
As an aside, it would never happen but ever since I first saw her picture, I’ve thought porn star Riely Steele has the perfect look to be cast as Dagger.

Can she actually act at all?
depends on what you mean by “act”. Will she be winning an Oscar anytime soon? But she’s better than most porn actresses. At least in the couple of (obviously limited) “mainstream” things I’ve seen her in (a really bad Horror movie called Piranha 3D and a couple Skinemax shows. But in all those roles she basically plays “sexy bimbo” so I dunno… I was just judging based on her look. I knew nothing about her when I first saw her picture.
