So during my rant the other day on why I think Falcon SHOULDN’T become Captain America, I had a sidebar tangent about Truth: Red, White & Black, a brilliant graphic novel wherein Captain America finds out that in order to refine the Super Soldier Serum, the US Military experimented on 300 expendable black soldiers because, you know, white guys are too valuable. By the way, this is totally the kind of thing that the government ACTUALLY did. Anyway, my friend Christopher Lee responded in a comment that there should totally be a Truth movie:
Christopher Lee writes:
+1 on Truth: Red, White and Black. I loved that story and wish they would make it into a movie, with the tiny cameo by Chris Evans at the end.
I agree, and I asked him to fantasy cast it.
Then I was thinking about it in my head and thought “how about Terry Crews?” But, then I thought about it more and decided that Crews would be much better, at least in my head, as Luke Cage, which would just be ridiculously awesome. So then I thought, why not cast all the black superhero movies that don’t exist? So now I have a question for comic book geekdom assembled, especially fans of characters of color. Fantasy cast black superheroes. Here are some obvious movies off the top of my head that I’d love to see someone come up with stars for:
- Isaiah Bradley (The Truth)
- Luke Cage (which is happening soon from Netflix anyway)
- Cyborg
- John Stewart (Green Lantern)
- Static
- Icon and Rocket
- Monica Rambeau (Captain Marvel II)
- Cloak (and might as well do Dagger while you’re at it, I know she’s white but how do you cast Cloak without Dagger?)
- Misty Knight (who one would assume is going to show up in Netflix’s Iron Fist)
- Black Panther
Feel free to add add to the list and cast supporting characters as well. I’m really curious.
For Truth, I’m thinking Jamie Foxx for Isaiah, Halle Berry as his wife. Angela Bassett as his mom. Denzel Washington as Black Cap. Cuba Gooding Jr. as the guy who explodes in the beginning. Robbie Gee as Larsen.
Oh man, for Static I would want Laurence Mason.
Angela Bassett is so cool … she could be any/all of the characters.
Can our fantasy cast be at any age? Or do the actors need to be the right age now?
Hmmm… I dunno that it matters. It’s fantasy casting…
I’m trending towards older, because my movie watching history is a bit dated. But also, Hollywood tends to cast towards younger, and fuck those guys.
Bassett was seriously ripped when she did Strange Days. They wouldn’t have needed any fake-muscle bodysuit.
I don’t know any of these characters, but please find a spot for Lennie James. Lennie James rules.

Haha, I loved him in Snatch. “You ain’t from this planet are you, Vincent? Who is gonna mug two black fellas, holding pistols, sat in a car that is worth less than your shirt?”

I think there’s got to be a character for Avery Brooks ala Hawk timeframe.
Chiwetel Ejiofor, Dayo Okeniyi, or Nonso Anozie would be my first choice if he could ‘Chris Pratt’ up for the role of Black Panther.
Terry Crews would be the perfect Luke Cage if he were younger. But he’s not.
Black Panther needs to be Idris Elba.
I’d dig Idris….if he wasn’t already Heimdall. A great one at that.
Also, I agree on Terry for Luke Cage…it would be awesome. Plus he has the size…who else does? Seriously…I can’t think of anyone…
Since I’m time traveling, Paul Robeson would be the best Black Panther in my book.
Isaiah Mustafa as Luke Cage.
Assuming Cloak is behind a mask and/or CGI, I would want his voice and movement to be Michael K. Williams (a.k.a. Chalky White from Boardwalk Empire). Dagger would be Jennifer Lawrence.
