Day 235 of 365 days. I’ve done long exposure shots before, even in this project, so I was really hoping to use this weeks Class With Dave assignment to do something else, but I haven’t had the time what with working on my paper (I’ve gotten it "complete." Tomorrow is for editing and turning it…

Day 226 of 365 days. You know, I almost want to call this a bringing sexy back pic? What do you people think? I got to sleep in today. It was nice and I needed it. After I finally did get up, I did a little bit of the moving from our current bedroom to…

Cathedral of Learning

Cathedral of Learning

For the Class With Dave group. Assignment: Black and White architecture. This is a repeat assignment from earlier. My original version of this assignment was a much more standard, though high contrast B&W night scene, so I decided to go with something more creative and different from what I normally do. This was shot in the afternoon on the University of Pittsburgh campus. In order to get more fantastic and less realistic tones, I used a combination of Channel Mixer, Curves and Levels adjustment layers with layer masks.

Channel Mixer:
Red: +40 Green: +180 Blue: -100

Levels 1:
input Black: 10 Gray: 1.00 White: 233
output Black: 0 White: 255
with a layer mask blocking out the right (bright) side of the sky.

Curves (input,output):
0,0 41,90 168,141 197,181 228,137 255,255
with a layer mask blocking out the building and the tree

Levels 2:
input: Black: 0 Gray: 1.24 White: 255
output Black: 0 White: 255

Bus Accident

Bus Accident

For Class With Dave. Assignment: Reportage

Two city blocks in the Carrick region of Pittsburgh were blocked off today by police and fire personel after a minor accident involving two city buses and a gasoline truck. While the police were detouring traffic around, I took the opportunity to park my car and take advantage of my good luck for this weeks assignment. Not as cool as when I witnessed a shooting a couple months ago, but it was something.

For Class with Dave. Assignment: Fill the frame

I actually fill the frame on portraits all the time, so I wanted to do something a little different. I ended up stopping by the Mt. Oliver Fire Department on my way home the other day and asked if I could take pictures of them cleaning their trucks. Initially I was going to use that as my "newsworthy" photo, but frankly all of them sucked. But I did like this shot and so here it is.

Day 206 of 365 days. I had actually been thinking of doing this back when Steph was doing her tributes to famous paintings, but I never got around to it. But I then when I got this weeks Class With Dave assignment I was happy that I’d be able to use it. This image is…

Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night

Taken for the Class with Dave group. The assignment was to take a picture inspired by music. This is about as inspired as one can get I guess. This is Bonfire Night, my friend Lisa’s band. Steph and I went to go see them perform on Friday night. Sadly, Lisa stood in the shadows pretty much the entire time, so the rest of the band shows up much better than she does. Better pictures of her are available in the photoshoot of her I did a while back.

lightswitch

lightswitch

Taken for the Class with Dave group. The assignment was to take a picture of anything and use a "non-standard" crop. I’ve actually used lots of weird crops at different points, but that actually made this a little harder. I spent the entire week trying to find something that could really be featured by a really long tall crop. I decided on the lightswitch ot my kitchen, which is really dirty and needs to be cleaned. Ah well. They can’t all be winners

comics

comics

Taken for the Class with Dave group. The assignment was to take a picture with lots of colors. This was actually tricky for me because even when I don’t do black and whites, I’m not big on featuring lots of colors. But I did have an immediate idea for it. And so, off to the comic book store! I had to hit at least 3 of the following colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. I think I did a little better than that.

Martin’s Ferry Steel Plant

Martin's Ferry Steel Plant

Taken for the Class with Dave group. The assignment was to take a picture of some sort of architecture in black and white and to share the photoshop settings for the translation with the group. This shot was immediately what sprang to mind when I read the assignment. Its a steel plant on the way to one of the cities I wrestle in. I took the shot on the way home so that it would be darker and the lights would be on. I used a fairly long exposure and a higher ISO to get a lot of exposure detail.

In photoshop I used a channel mixer adjustment layer to set it to black and white with the following settings:

Red: +20%, Green: +35%, Blue: +75%

Then I added a levels adjustment layer with these settings:

input Black: 15, input Mid: 1.0, input White: 240
output Black: 0, output White: 255
