Eight of Cups

Eight of Cups

I have a hard time finding male models. I get a lot of my female models through Model Mayhem but there just aren’t as many men there.

Luckily I know a gazillion male wrestlers. Facade was perfect for my Eight of Cups card. I asked him to do it ages ago, but we only recently got around to shooting it. Pretty happy with how it turned out.

After doing no Tarot cards for months, I got three done this week. All with new models. Kinda weird the way they go in bursts like that.

This one is Miaa and Xero. They were supposed to do a longer shoot, but Miaa wasn’t feeling well. Yet they still showed up to make sure they got the tarot card done. For that I am very thankful. Definitely have to get them back to do a longer shoot soon.

After doing no Tarot cards for months, I got three done this week. All with new models. Kinda weird the way they go in bursts like that.

This one is staring Marybeth, who I did a big shoot with on back on Thursday. A lot more shots of her to come, but I’m actually four shoots of editing behind right now, so it may take me a while to catch up.

And I am caught up with my tarot cards. I still have a couple I want to redo slightly (moving some pictures to different numbers) but at least I’ve finally gotten through all of the ones that I was backlogged on.

This is Leia. She was nice enough to sit for a Tarot shoot a few weeks ago (ended up in my 365 for that day). There’s some other photos of her as well that I’ll hopefully get to sooner rather than later.

Still adding to the male tarot cards. I did so many female ones in a row that now I’m having to do a bunch of males to catch up. Wayne was one of the earliest people I cast for the project, but like so many others, it took me a while to get to him. No matter, I’m quite happy with the results.

Six of Cups

I’ve been trying to catch up with the male tarot cards lately, so I’ve done a few shoots of guys.

This one is Marcel on the Six of Cups. All of my sixes have the modern equivalent of suit item. It took me a long time to figure out what a modern cup would be, as drinking technology hasn’t really changed much over the last couple hundred years. But then my friend Katy recommended a simple disposable plastic cup and I knew that was perfect. I had wanted to do a street musician picture anyway, and I like how the saxophone kind of slightly mirrors the cup idea.

Queen of Cups

Opal Rae was another model I met on Model Mayhem. She initially wrote me several months ago wanting to be a part of the tarot project, but like so many others I was unable to find time to sync our schedules together.

Finally got that chance earlier this week. I’m quite happy with the results, and though its subtle, I feel as though the card says Mystery quite well.

One of the things I’m trying to do with the tarot cards is keep them as simple as possible. I was worried that I was getting too intricate with some of them. Lately I’ve been happier, as I feel that I am returning to the original spirt of the cards and design concepts.

Comments and criticism as always welcome.

Rima contacted me about posing for the Tarot deck on Wednesday and we shot her on Thursday. It’s about the fatest turnaround I’ve ever done on a shoot, but it was another case of just trying to get a shoot in when both the model and I happened to have time.

I was quite happy to work with her, since through happenstance right now, the deck was very "caucasian." It’s been hard to find people of color for it. Especially women. I was hoping her complexion still comes across well in the B&W.

The big challenge here was representing "love" while only using one person so that it conceptually fit with the other twos in the deck.

Interpretation, comments and criticism welcome as always, and in fact encouraged.

Page of Cups

The second completed Tarot Card in my series. Using a shot from the Theresa photoshoot that I thought was perfect for capturing the idea of the card.

I’m using spot color for all of the cup cards, and I really wanted to have a little more in them than appears here, but I feel its important to not overdo it, and the little splash of red wine seems to be perfect for this one.

Other themes of note here: All of my pages are going to be women. I’m considering changing it to the alternate name "Princess" but I like the sound of "Page" some how. Also, all of the pages will be wearing lingerie or bed clothes (as will all of the male knights). The cups, aside from B&W with color cutouts will also all be wearing rather casual or street clothing (i have other methods of dress in mind for other suits).

I also just realized a flaw in my design. I have the number of the card (Roman numeral for Major Arcana) in the upper left hand corner, but the kings and knights will both start with K. This is bad. Any suggestions for avoiding this are appreciated (I am considering Kn for knight).

If anyone has any suggestions or questions about other themes and ideas I have worked out so far, please comment and let me know… its a big job and all input is welcome.
