Even though I was doing the anti-mav thing of using highkey predominantly white photos, I decided it might make sense to do some more normal (for me) chiaroscuros as well. Maybe I’ll juxtapose the images in the final show. Maybe I’ll just go for the white ones. Opinions?
I sent out a message to myspace a while back looking for nude models for my project for my next art show. Leann was the first to reply. The theme of the show is "Light," but although I use a lot of studio lights in my photography, ultimately, my work is usually about "darkness." But I came up with this concept as a compromise. Sarah was nice enough to volunteer to pose for the Tarot deck when she was visiting last week. The second she volunteered, I knew exactly what card I wanted to use her for. I love the tattoo on her shoulder and she has just enough hair to obscure her face in mystery and make a perfect High Priestess. Originally I was thinking of adding some background elements like I did with some of the other cards, but as I was finishing up, I felt like that would have been doing too much. I remembered why I went for the cold black backgrounds in the first place. Not to distract from the model. Just let her create the mood alone.

Like most of my recent models, I met Laurie on Model Mayhem. I actually saw her as a preppy staff card type for my Tarot Set, but she told me she really wanted to try to be one of the sword cards. The more I talked to her, the more I liked the idea of using her there. She has a very versatile look and that ended up being perfect for the idea of the 3 cards, a reflection of the one suit in another.
