Two of Coins

Two of Coins

The problem with taking years to complete a project like my Tarot Deck is that as time goes on I realize how unhappy I am with some of the earlier shots. This means I have to redo them, which means that the project takes even longer to complete.

The old Two of Coins has been on my list to reshoot for a long time, but it wasn’t actually my intention to use Lizz for the reshoot. In fact I had her pegged for the four of staffs, which wasn’t done yet at all. But after we shot that, she ended up liking one of the dresses in my model closet a lot (I have a wardrobe full of outfits for shoots) and once she tried it on, I decided she a great look for this card. Once I had edited it, I really felt like this was totally the way to go. I’m glad I did. Of course now I have to shoot the four of staffs yet again, but I’m pretty sure its worth it.

King of Coins

King of Coins

It’s been a while since I posted a tarot card, and I was three behind, so I figured that I’d put one together tonight.

This is Kevin. He’s actually a makeup artist, not a model, and in fact is the MUA I hired all the way back when I did the photoshoot for Cosmic Hellcats so if you follow my stream you know how long ago that was.

I might get another up tomorrow, but for now, here’s the King of Coins.

XI-Justice

XI-Justice

Decided it was long past time I posted some more cards. I wonder if people even remember that I was doing this. Anyway, I had shot a couple more cards in some of my last few photoshoots but been holding off on dealing with them since I had so much else going on. I thought it was high time I put them up though.

I never met Leann before the day I shot her. She had heard about the projeet and wanted to be a part of it. But once I started shooting her, the exact way her hair was, her tattoos and even her body just screamed to me that I had found my Justice card.

Six of Staffs

This one was shot during my shoot with Dyllan. She had wanted to be a part of the Tarot project almost since I started it. And as she was moving away, I figured it was one of our last chances. Dyllan is a singer, and so choosing her to use a microphone as a staff seemed totally obvious.

Five of Coins

Five of Coins

It’s been a while since I posted a new tarot card. I just hadn’t been doing them. Partly I needed a break, and partly I just hadn’t been doing shoots in general or those in specific. But I did get one done with Marlo during her shoot.

This is actually one of the earliest ideas I had. When I realized I wanted to use dead and hurt people for the five cards, I decided that I had to do the old tradition of placing coins over the eyes for the coin card. And then when I found out Marlo had a wedding dress, the whole thing just came together.

Somehow, I like the juxtaposition of a wedding and a funeral at the same time. Somehow to me, nothing says worry like a bride who has died in her wedding dress, still holding the bouquet.

Three of Coins

Three of Coins

Weird thing about this whole being an artist gig. When I was at a friends wedding the other day, I got introduced to a model and we started talking about the Tarot project and she instantly wanted to do it. So we swapped numbers and here we are, the first tarot card I’ve finished in a while.

I was worried about this one actually, as per all coin cards, it had to be sepia, but as per the concept of three cards, it had to be a mirror or clone shot. I was worried that the sepia against the B&W of a cup card would be too weird, but I actually kind of like it. It really kind of gives me the yin yang sense that I’m trying to pull off with the threes.

One of the things that makes me think that I’m getting some success as a photographer is that I now have people asking to shoot with me. That’s how I found Rana. She heard about the Tarot project from another model and wanted to be a part of it. We had our shoot yesterday, and I’m quite happy with the results. She has a nice socialite look about her which I thought went well with the coins cards. I’m behind with photo editting, but I’ll be posting other shots of her when I get to them.

Day 290 of 365 days. Today was tarot card processing day. That’s pretty much what I did all day. I now have 20 cards done in the Maverick Tarot set. I wanted to see what the cards will ultimately look like so I printed them out on my inkjet. Now I need to buy more…

Queen of Staffs

Queen of Staffs

Pinky came over and posed for me the other day. The result, yet another Tarot card. The first one in the Staffs suit. I’m still not totally sure I like the effect of this one. I keep floating between loving it and thinking its not quite right. I like that its vibrant and distinct. I was initially going for kind of an airbrush effect, but then started going with a tinge of "300"-style postprocessing. I really need it to have a distinct contrast with the swords cards, but I want to make sure its obvious that its processed.

So I’d definitely like feedback here. What do you think?

Ace of Coins

Ace of Coins

Continuing my Tarot Deck series. This time using Steph for my model. In these two cards (the first of the cups series) you can see another couple of concepts that will be continued throughout the deck. First, the artistic look and fashion of the coins cards, and also that the aces and tens will feature the same models with the ace being a close up shot of the ten card.

XVIII – The Moon

XVIII - The Moon

The fourth completed card in my tarot card series.

Mallory as the Moon. I had originally envisioned this as a card where she was standing and looking at the moon, but as we were shooting yesterday, she got tired of standing and wanted to shoot some sitting down. I really loved her head placement in this one and the arch of her back. I think the facial expression is perfect for what I wanted to convey.

The biggest thing I am unsure of is the placement of the moon. When I took the pic of the moon last week, I really had envisioned her looking at it, not away, but I do feel as though it kind of works how it is. Not positive though.

Jack of Swords

Jack of Swords

The third completed card in my tarot card series.

Shiima as the Jack of Swords. Commonly called a knight. I decided to rename them to Jacks for the same reason they call them Jacks instead of Knaves on the modern playing card deck. Namely, that K is the same letter for King. I’m still not positive on that. But its growing on me. I’m also of still of the opinion that the lens flare is a bit cheesy, but I think it adds something to the effect. Opinions?

Day 213 of 365 days. I’ve said it before. I’ll say it again. I’m probably the hardest working unemployed man in the world. Today I accomplished several things. I talked to two recruiters and emailed with a third. I spent the rest of the day working on my paper for the conference I’m speaking at…
